I should be doing something else
|
I don't think it will happen over the next couple of years but once £1 = €1 I would say it wouldd then be up for debate.
The old fashioned side of me says I would rather stick with what I know, the good old pounds Stirling, but as a lot of other people have pointed out, once the £1 = €1 situation happens, it would be the obvious next step to switch to the Euro, as it would make trading far more straightforward.
Lady DJ - I do not understand how we could possibly be using the dollar? the Pound is worth 100% more than the dollar so why would we want to change to a weaker currency? If anything like that was going to happen it would be the Dollar being replaced with STG, which again, is very unlikely to happen. |

It will be awhile before the Brits switch to the Euro, maybe never. I was in the U.K. when they went metric and they did not like that either, merchants were threatened with litigation if they refused metric coins. |

I doubt it and it is a tragedy. China plus the countries in the Euro currency zone are going to be the economic powerhouses of the next 20 years. Britain as well as allowing the bulk of its manufacturing industry to close and disintegrate, has stubbornly refused to become fully part of Europe by adopting the Euro currency, preferring instead to stay on the economic perpiphery of Europe while joining forces with America politically and monetarily and squandering endless resources in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Euro zone is still trading with Britain but eventually they will tire of our ambivalence towards Europe and the awkwardness of dealing with the £ sterling, and they will trade elsewhere; the British economy is due for complete meltdown in the not too distant future. |

Probably not. It would be for the best but as most of UK is English (there's about 55m of them) and they are regretfully rather old fashioned and stuck in their ways they'll vote to stay with the pound sterling. |

Well the government will tell you "there are no plans too", but if we stay with this party, it is sure to happen sooner or later. We didn't want to go decimal back in the 1970's, but did anyway. We had no choice, We did not want to go metric but we did any way. We had no choice. We had to do it to keep up with our European Neighbours. So it follows that (for our own good of course?!) we will meekly follow suit and have Euros. After all we mus toe the line and do as we are told by the bureaucrats. After all if we are no longer allowed to have a curvey cucumber (honestly!), if our jam, sausages, etc have to meet euro specs, what hope our money, which in fact isn't really OUR money because we changed it 35 years ago! |

The United Kingdom has an opt-out from eurozone membership under the Maastricht treaty and is not obliged to join the euro. While the government is in favour of membership provided the economic conditions are right (requiring that "five economic tests" be met), the question has never been put to referendum. |

I think they will, perhaps they are still using delay tactics to wait and see if Eur will match them.
My thinking is that, once Eur get very close to pounds then they will consider it |

Probably. The cost of living under this UK Government is getting higher and higher it won't make much difference. |

Most certainly. |

Good question - I believe that within 10 years we will either be using the Euro or the Dollar... as the world economies become more and more tied together, it will simply ultimately make more sense to have a common currency...
I love the pound - but I do not think the UK is a big enough player to make everyone share our currency - so instead we will join another |

Even being the Pound sterling the only European currency that can be 4 different currencies, depending on what part of the UK you are (England, Scotland, Wales or N Ireland), and even with the GBP going all the way down, together with the Dollar, I believe the way the Brits, as stubborn as they are, or liking to be different as they do (as in NOT europeans) will never accept the Euro. Or drive on the right.
Thankfully, as a foreigner living in Ireland, I think accepting the Euro was the biggest demonstration this small and insignificant island gave to show the Brits it is not a colony anymore. |
