I think it *could* be turned back around but not sure that it actually will be.
We need to control immigration - the UK is a very small country (in terms of actual size) and is literally bursting at the seams. We need to stop almost everyone from entering, except for those who have skills that are in demand. However, being a member of the EU means that unfortunately, we are going to continue to have to let other EU citizens in, so perhaps the answer is to leave the EU.
Then, we need to do something about crime. We need to look to New York City where they implemented a zero tolerance policy and it worked - and yet here, every time a zero tolerance policy is suggested, people complain about how ridiculous the idea is.
Then we need to change the benefits system. Yes, we have to (and should be happy to) provide for those who are truly in need, but we have to eliminate the whole "dole bludger" culture where people are choosing to be on benefits rather than working. This should be simple enough to do - lower benefits payments, and increase minimum wage to a decent amount. This will stop people will no qualifications who should be looking at unskilled jobs from thinking along the lines of "why would I want a job cleaning toilets? I could get as much money on the dole." Not saying that all people think this - but a lot do.
Then, let's revamp the education system ... firstly it's graded too easy now, with too many students receiving A* and A grades who don't deserve them. More students need to be encouraged to stay on at school for longer, and to study subjects like sciences and languages that are more beneficial in the workplace, and take less subjects like media studies and art history that aren't useful. We need to stop all this political correctness that has meant the top universities feel they need to admit a certain number of students from poorer areas, and instead allow them to be as selective as they want ... that's what will allow them to remain competitive.
So ... I think there could be some hope for the future of UK society, but only if the powers-that-be are prepared to actually act on it, and to make decisions that might be less than popular right now. |

I can't see anything changing. what we really need is strong politicians who will bring in tougher laws to sort out the dregs of society. I honestly don't think any of the major political parties are strong enough for the job |

I'd say only if something drastic is done. No sign of any thing yet! |

Of course there is hope, people have been complaining about the decline of society since the Romans. What they are really worrying about is the Change in society and not a reduction in values, respect and prosperity. We need to learn how to adapt to new conditions and challenges once those lessons are learnt humanity is very resillient and determined to succeed as a species. We are not descending into chaos or anarchy just finding our way out of a slump. Soon there will be a boom period again. Look forward to Camelot and attempt to solve the problems that we are faced with.
In the middle ages Cohn was complaining about the ill behaved youth whose use of foul, language, violence and casual attitudes to sex were to bring down society. He predicted a biblical holocaust to cleanse the earth of profanity. Nothing has changed save for the authors of the same rhetoric |

We need to end the ideals of multi culturalism as they fracture society.
All societies work on the premise of a common goal - so we need to identify those goals and get on with it.
Once we recognise that we have to be united and work on it - then we will become focused and be able to build on that.
Hopefully. |

we have too many scroungers in this country. Too many disrespectful people who will steal and cheat their way through life. We need to bring back discipline and respect in the home and at school. If we don't then there is no hope for the future. |

There is no true downhill or uphill, society, people and life are fluidic, just endlessly moving like water throughout their existence from one medium to another.
Every society has gone 'downhill' as you say yet it always comes back in a new incarnation. The UK is just changing, just like it always has and always will.
Ah a thumb down. Being close-minded is so cute. |

There is alot of future it is just the media making things up, compared to other countries the UK is doing really well. Societies are hard to run things have never gone smoothly. I think the media and gov are putting lots of emphasis on things like bad parenting to draw attention away from the real truth, that they are getting rid of the NHS and all the other mess they have created...Now if people acutally voted maybe we would start to get somewhere... |

What evidence do you have it is going 'downhill'? Older generations have always said this about younger generations for several decades out of fear of change. I don't think it is getting any easier, but we have to use our collective intelligence, compassion and bravery to adapt and improve things where we can. |

Other answers high light the media responsibility as part of this. This is spot on, you could say that bad news is their stock in trade - when was the last time you learned of something good happening on a broad scale in the news?
However the fact that they are allowed and even desire to report in this manner is indicative of much worse under lying problems. I have been reading a lot of Dianetics books recently. These seem to have real workable answers to why people behave the way they do, and why things seem to get worse never better. Many people instantly dismiss Dianetics and its related subject Scientology, why? Because THE MEDIA told them that these subjects are in some way harmful. If you are really concerned about societal decline check out these and other groups who have a genuine interest in making the world a better place to live in. You can do something about it. |

if the labour government keeps letting in everyone then it is doomed..and giving more rights to scroungers off the state than working people..AND AND allowing known terrorists to stay in the UK. i think it may be too late.
i'm off asap |

I think unless we stop being so PC and giving in to the demands of other foreign cultures then it will not be a good place to live.
The only time i feel like im in England is when i go down to Devon or something otherwise, a lot of the time i feel like i am in another country.
Another thing, is all these rights for kids who have committed crimes and are now being seen as the 'victim' of a troubled life.
There is so much corruption going on as well, the government needs to pull its finger out and start taking this country seriously and keep it as the UK and not a hub for immigration problems.
Also the NEWSPAPERS...HAVE a lot to answer for. old ladies wont leave there house in fear of being stabbed by a hoddied teenager....even though stats prove there is more chance of falling down a flight of stairs then of being stabbed ...? The Government needs to crack down on negative media because the are so many good things happening in the world which we should focas on as well. |
