Not a single one of these answers is correct.
The UK is a country by the political definition of a country, i.e. it has one government which rules all its parts.
It stands for The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is an island consisting of England, Scotland and Wales.
There is a certain degree of autonomy now for Scotland, but only as much as for any US state, and rather less for Wales and Northern Ireland.
To KenB, above, the United Kingdom is a political union, Great Britain is an island. Have you never looked at a map, a list of countries or a list of islands? |

I think you have to see it from the "de jure" and "de facto" point of view.
From "de jure" (legal point), it's NOT, because the name is United Kingdom, so it means that it's a Region consist of several Countries (England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales).
But from "de facto" (fact exist), it IS, because it's ruled by one leader (The Queen) |

~Les~
|
No. It's a region within a group of unified smaller countries. UK is short of United Kingdom. United ... self explanitory and Kingdom, the group of countries. |

Andy
|
Yes the United Kingdom is a country.
For those who say UK=England please get your facts right!
The UNITED Kingdom is England, Scotland, Wales and NORTHERN Ireland.
UNITED being a bit of a giveaway clue that its not just England!
Ireland is a totally different country to the UK, just like Spain, France or Kenya are. |

no, and nor is Britain; it is a collection of countries |

What a lot of wrong answers.
The United Kingdom is NOT a country, rather it's a collection of countries just like Europe, North America or Asia.
It's made up of 4 separate countries namely England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
It's full title is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales only).
There is only one Monarch and Prime Minister of the UK and one central government. Each country other than England has a form of self government with limited powers, namely the Welsh Assembly, Northern Ireland Assembly and Scottish Parliament. |

No, its more of a way of life.
The original standard for others to live up to.
The following answer is also incorrect, Great Britain is a political union, not an island. |

uhh yea...did you ever hear of england or great britain? |
|

The UK is made up of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. These are all separate countries with their own governments and rulers (presidents, prime ministers, monarchies, etc). At times in their past, they have been ruled as one kingdom but that has ended and they all are independent. However, I think their military is one entity. It's all the Royal Airforce, Army and Navy. Each country devotes a number of troops to service and they all follow a central command. |
