Kids In London. What should we do ? |
Taking the kids to London for a couple of days. Want to do the traditional stuff, tour bus, museum, theatre etc but would welcome some advice.
I have looked for a theatre show, I thought the Lion King but the website says they need to be 7. (My kids are 9, 6 and 5) Which museum? Was thinking Science or History, which is more suitable?
Any other ideas welcome.
Thanks in advance |

science museum is a brilliant place, and its next door to the natural history museum, you could also go to the imperial war museum. lots of tanks and planes etc etc,
I would personally go to the science museum, its got lots of exhibits such as spacerockets etc, you could also go
to the childrens play area in hyde park (its the princess diana one in the top north west of the park)
if you want to see london then I wouldnt bother with the tour bus, but get on a river boat down to greenwich, you could spend an afternoon in greenwich, it has a lovely park and the maritime museum and of course the meridian line, and the park has fantastic views over london.
It is also worth checking out time out london, they have a kids section..
if you want to eat out, then the best place to go with kids is pizza express, the food is good and its very child friendly.

The London Aquarium's nice, and the Science Museum is an absolute must - even for kids, it's very touchy-feeley and there's loads to do.
Of course there's the London Eye, and the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace; shopping on Oxford or Regent Street, it's endless. |

Natural History is a great museum to take children to. Also the London Aquarium is good but quite expensive. |

Take them to the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden Opera House -
a Box would be best. |

By personal experience, I would say that the london eye was a complete waste of time..
Oh and by the way, the lion king was actually amazing! well worth it.. If you can get them in.. I think I was 5 back then =) |

I support the Natural History Museum idea; it's right around the corner from the Science Museum anyway.
I guess Madame Tussauds just either bores or scares them; and they might be bored with the London Eye before it's even half-way back down.
The giant Egyptian statues at the British Museum, perhaps?
Also, if you are in the vicinity of St Paul's and Shakespeare Globe, slip into the Tate Modern - you don't have to look at all the modern art crap - but sometimes they have stuff that moves and makes a lot of noise. Years ago they had a grand piano hanging from the ceiling that would fall down 2 metres with a lot of noise etc. every couple of minutes.
London Zoo maybe something for kids; and I think the snake scene from the first Harry Potter film has been filmed there, in case your 9-year old is into that.
King's Cross station is another Potter-related thing, too, of course:

Also, check out London's official tourism website - they have recommendations for travelling with children:

Both the Science and Natural History museums are good and cater quite well for the age group you have. They are next to each other (South kensington tube station, then follow signs) and have a connecting passageway, but the entrance to the natural history museum is a wow in its self. You can easily fill a day in each if your children were older, but a few hours to half a day in each is not impossible, with a moving life size 'T Rex' and other things from Jurassic Park, Whales etc then to the children section of the Science Museum with a lot of 'hands on stuff' for them to touch/make work etc. Also have a 'Space section', this will keep them occupied. As for shows not sure about them. Then the next day take them to Hamleys the very famous and big Toy shop (near Oxford circus I think). Get the Travel cards for tube/bus it works out cheaper, can get advice as to most suitable for you at the tube stations. Then there is Tower of London, Buckingham Palace is open some days (check as this is seasonal) and you can see the coaches horses etc. Hope this helps. |
