Lake district? |
I have no idea what the Lake district is like, but hear it is beautiful. Has anyone got some opinions about where the best place to go is. I've seen a few stations in the area, but how do you know which one to go to. We only want to go for a weekend, so we won't be able to fit much in. Any suggestions? |

There are lots of places to visit....the big tourist area is of course Windermere, where you can cruise the lake, visit lots of shops, but for the best areas you need to go out of the way....I would suggest you go to Keswick station if you like hill walking....it is near to many interesting walks, do a bit of research before you come.....you will love it, if only for the scenery....so Windermere for the tourist bits, and Keswick for the more remote areas....lots of pubs or bed and breakfast places to stay in....and don't forget the camera.
If you like major towns with Castles and shopping centres then go to either Carlisle or Penrith. |

lake windamere is the largest lake and pretty good looking... i have been many different places, so hard to tell you which one to go to... the best thing to do is just go, anywhere you go you will enjoy the weekend and have a relaxing time... no part is bad :-) if you fancy a bit of fun while there, try climbing scafell or hellvelyn. |

It's been years since i last went to the Lake District but when ever i went as a child with the family we'd always rent a Log Cabin in a little place called hartsop fold if i remember correctly it's near to Windemere where there's a large lake also visit a place called Glenriding (i think that is the right place) there is a lake i believe is called ullswater that is nice to visit and is the place where the BBC filmed a TV series called The Lakes i was lucky enough to be on holiday once there when they were filming some of the series the area is surrounded by mountains hills and fells a lot of them will be on your door step if you stay out of Windemere you may also wish to visit Kendal where they make Mint Cake and where they have a pencil factory if you go to Grasmere you can visit Dove cottage home of the poet William Wordsworth |

A good choice and a glorious corner of the country. Just bear in mind that it's also the wettest! |

Windermere with it's beautiful lakeside setting is a good place to make your base. It's a small town on lake Windermere, with a good choice of accommodation and a few shops and pubs. You have Ullswater (another lovely lake) and the Kirkstone Pass ( a spectacular hill climb road) nearby. Wastwater, Hardknott fort and the Wrynose pass are all worth a look as well, but are a bit further away. You'll have to pull on those walking boots and do some rambling at some point. If you do, I would advise sticking to the valley walks and lower slopes unless you are an experienced walker. I find the views are just as lovely down in the valley as they are from the tops.
The Lake District contains some of the most stunning scenery in the UK, so I'm sure you will enjoy it. |

Hi. Why not try looking on Enjoy England (www.enjoyengland.com). On here you will be able to find all the information you need on Lake District.
There are some really charming villages and towns in the Lake District. Blessed with beautiful scenery Ambleside, set at the head of Lake Windermere is one of the jewels of the area.
Grasmere is perhaps best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found".
Coniston is a good base for walkers and climbers.
The Monk Coniston estate, owned by the writer Beatrix Potter and bequeathed to the National Trust on her death, stretches from Coniston to Skelwith Bridge, and includes the famous beauty spot, Tarn Hows

If you go to either Windermere, Oxenholme or Penrith, you can buy a ticket on the Stagecoach Buses valid for 1, 3 & 7 Days (Something like that - see www.stagecoachbus.com/northwest - This will enable you to explore the Lakes at you own will. Depending on when you go depends on what the scenery is like - its gorgeous in the Autumn when the leaves are changing =). Try the http://www.lake-district.gov.uk/ website for more info |
