The law changed in 2003, you have to be over 18. It is illegal for someoe to buy alcohol for you BUT if a friend over 18 buys alcohol and then 'spontaneously' decides to share it with you (not in a pub) they that is legal.
BUT
"It is also an offence to buy alcohol and give it to someone under 18yrs - except that a person may buy beer, cider or wine for someone over 16years and under 18yrs to go with a table meal and that they are accompanying that person." |

The legal drinking age is 18. The law has got much stricter so anyone up to the age of 21 is liable to be ID'd. Many pubs welcome kids - some you have to be accompanied by an adult. A lot of bars are 18 or 21 and over only. |

As far as I know, if you are under 18, you can consume alcohol, but you cannot purchase it yourself. Also, you cannot consume it in licensed premises, but you could drink it in a pub beer garden for instance, as long as someone purchased it for you. |

After reading all the answers, I'm pretty convinced they are all spot on, but would be good to get clarification on exactly who the adult must be. It sounds like all you need is any random 18 year old who'd be willing to sit in the pub with you. To my knowledge, there are a few of those hanging around Oxford. |

The age at which people are legally allowed to purchase alcoholic beverages is generally 18 years of age (16 and 17 year olds can buy beer, wine, and cider in restaurants and separate eating areas of pubs). |

the legal drinking age in public is 18 though if you are over 18. You may have i believe half a glass of wine while be accompanied by an adult though i may be wrong about this point. In a private party or house you may drink no matter what your age. you also have to be at least 18 to buy any alcohol and it is getting a lot stricter here now. so pubs and bars ask you to prove your 18 if you do not look 21. |

sorry it's 18 here, although you are allowed to have sex at 16 which means you are allowed to have kids at sixteen. So to sum up your too young to have a pint but you are perfecltly grown up enough to create another life and be resposible for a child at the age of sixteen. But please don't do that be sixteen and enjoy your summer. |
