You get the Best of both cities by going to Liverpool and visiting Manchester.
Liverpool is great for its buildings, the cathedrals particularly the Catholic Christ the King; try and go to his on a sunny day when the light streams through the fantastic glass. The Anglican cathedral is also very impressive. I agree with another answer that the Philharmonic pub is great.

Art is well-catered for in the Walker and Tate Modern galleries.
The Maritime Museum is fantastic; it pulls no punches about less welcome aspects of the city's past such as the slave trade.

As for Manchester , there is some splendid architecture of the Victorian age, the town hall being an absolute classic. compare this to Liverpool's older and more restrained equivalent, both excellent buildings.

If you want to see Manchester or strictly Salford's regeneration, go to the Lowry Centre and see the works of the North West' most famous artist of the 20th century.

This area of the NW was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. there are museums celebrating that in Manchester.

Sorry cannot help re nightlife, past clubbing I am afraid!

Liverpool every time. Lots of great architecture, the new docklands(very flash)galleries, museums, great pubs,(don't miss the Philharmonic Pub-original,unspoiled) .clubs, music( 'Scouse House' or whatever you want) and safer than Manchester. Two cathedrals of totally different styles connected by Hope Street.Great Chinatown.Biggest Chinese arch outside of China (Chinese New Year is Feb 7th- huge event in Liverpool-thousands out for it.) See Liverpool city website for what's on.Some good hostels and cheaper hotels or the Adelphi if you want 'upper crust'.See hostelbookers.com for Liverpool(or any other) hostels.Enjoy!

Liverpool, cooler name. plus the beattles rock!

Liverpool, there are some great bars on the albert dock and nighclubs and casionos all within walking distance. There are also travelodges in the town centre that you can stay in

Manchester!! Go to hostelworld.com and they should be able to help. I know there's one near Piccadilly (Merchant's Hotel maybe?), can't quite remember the name. Or look down Wilmslow Road in Fallowfield for B&Bs.

By the way, if you hop on a train to Liverpool then it only takes 45 minutes, costs about £8 (£5 with a railcard) and it makes for a good day out. You can also get to Leeds within an hour from Manchester if you want a trip out in the other direction!

Angel
They are both great English cities.

liverpool is crap - just ask ringo starr lol

if you want historic buildings, go to chester, an hour by train, absolutely beautiful...

ignore the guy who mentioned leeds - anyone who thinks leeds is better than manchester for anything is off their trolley

second only to trollalalala
Manchester has genuinely regenerated itself culturally and refined the city; Liverpool has simply stuck a few statues and mounments in areas of destitution and somehow had the city of culture slapped on it. Culture of pickpocketing, perhaps...

Nightlife I cannot comment on. Leeds is better, slightly more low key (at least where I hung out...), and isn't far away.
