London Obsessed American? |
I live in America, but I absolutely love London! I think it's the most amazing place ever. I love the culture, fashion, awesome accents, and I could go on forever! Now, I know what most of you are thinking, I'm just some lame overweight American who has nothing to do than fantasize about a better life in London. And I guess that's probably true. Lol. I really want to move to London but obviously that won't happen since I'm still young and live with my family who is quite content where they are. How do I fill the void of experiencing what London is like until I'm old and wealthy enough to actually move there? |

If you like the fashion then you can always keep up with the trends here by logging onto websites such as: H&M, TopShop, Zara (although it's Spanish!), Marks & Spencer, Next, Principles, Wallis, Debenhams, Monsoon etc. and looking for similar items where you live or buying them on Ebay international sellers. If you like the food then you could look up recipes from BBC Food, Delia Online etc. If you like the TV and the accents then subscribe to BBC America or buy DVD's. Some great programmes from the UK to consier are: Hustle, Hotel Babylon (both set in London), or for comedys - Black Books, Spaced, The Mighty Boosh. Afterlife (UK version of Medium but better). If you don't mind a bit of Scottish then Sea of Souls is great (paranormal) or Monarch of the Glen (drama). :earn the rules of cricket, follow the football premiership, drink Gin and Tonic or a pint of bitter - Talk about the weather every opportunity you get, read the Telegraph Expat bulletins and always always have a pot of tea on the go. Cucumber sandwiches and scones with afternoon tea anyone?
As for no one knowing their neighbours, I can vouch it's not true everywhere. Obviously if you work in the City long hours, live in a flat and don't have a family you're not going to have energy to get to know your neighbours. Personally I live in a lovely Victorian street of houses with gardens in South London where I practically know everyone in my street, we feed each others cats when away and our kids play together, we all have sets of each other's keys and we pop in for tea frequently. Yes, there are rough parts but it's not that bad! |

You could always read London newspapers and magazines online such as Timeout.
http://www.timeout.com/london/
Or you could join various London-centric groups on social networking sites.
If your family are willing to host foreigners you could always sign up to Couchsurfing. Or you can just offer to show Londoners around your area. Then, when you are old enough to travel you will have lots of London friends and free places to stay.

You could always consider going to school overseas. There are great great schools in London for you to get your BA, MA, or pursue a PhD.
I totally understand your love for London. I studied abroad there during my junior year of college and am returning in September for my postgraduate studies! I hope you find a way to get over there too! |

London is a fairly small part of England, like all major cities it has nice and nasty parts, unlike almost all of America theres quite a high sense of isolation there, for example in America most people know their neighbors, in London its not like that. London also has an extremely rough side with lots of violence and gangs, people have an idea that it's an amazing rich beautiful place but until you go there you'll see it's not that similar to how you imagine it. Try watching kidulthood and see the rougher part of London. It's not all about the Queen and speaking posh, parts of it are utterly dire. |
