It has gone downhill. It started with the middle class invasion. Whole swathes of the area became divided into have and have-nots. They never mix. The invaders don't work in the area, send their kids to local schools or even use the local shops. Certain areas are now so gentrified that if you dare walk down the street someone calls the police. I kid you not, it has happened to me.
The rich become richer, the poor get poorer. Add on the drug gangs moving in (supplying both groups) and it's a recipe for a breakdown in community, families living miles apart 'cos the younger generation can't afford to live there and a decline of businesses and services in the area.
Poverty and crime have gone up. |

as for the real East End haven't really got an opinion, except there's far worse places up north (north of England I mean not North London) |

I was born and grew up in Stoke Newington, Reggie and Ronnie Kray's gangland. I could walk the streets at 2pm or 2am and be bothered by no one. |

The East End has never appealed to me in the past, but some areas are quite nice. I work in Liverpool St., and Hoxton is nearby which I quite like. The Brick Lane area is supposed to be quite gentrified too. However places further east are still pretty miserable unfortunately. |

I moved from East London 3 years ago, where I was the crime was ridiculous, although improvements are being done for the look of the east not much is being done about the ignorance and asbo's that are there. I am proud I'm an east ender but wouldn't move back. NO WAY! |

It's certainly gone downhill, I lived in Canning Town and then West Ham for years, and I moved away about four years ago because the crime was getting worse. Newham council have just run down the borough, I have visited several times since but it feels like there's always a threat of violence in the air that was never there before |
