im scottish and i kill spiders cos they have made no impact whatsoever on the midge population. They have now reached maximum population carrying capacity, and where they would have returned to scotland along m74, they now feel that the overcrowding is too much and have decided to emigrate to england. This is much to my liking, but unfortunately, the ones who have remained here are not practising birth control and the population is still as dense. We need to take matters into our own hands - a massive one week assault on the midge by low flying aircraft dusting our land with DDT ( i know its technically banned, but still legal in some countries so we could put forward an argument surely?) with gas masks for the rest of us! lol |

Midges in Scotland seem to be more carniverous and have a more voracious appetite for human flesh in Scotland. I was almost eaten alive in Glen Torridon once. But we do have midges down south too. I live in the far south, and usually in the summer evenings there are so many that literally thousands come into your house at night, so you have to shut the windows. This summer though it has been so hot and dry that the swampy ground has dried out - so no midges this year! |

I'm not long back from Iceland, and I got eaten quite badly by midgies on a walk up an extinct volcano. So there's one other place that has them for certain! |

Hey...I stay in Scotland too. I know what you mean. Be rest assured there are mosquitoes in Florida that are just as bad as midgies. |

We have them in N ireland too ,only having experienced your Scottish variety at first hand, i have to say that ours are not so large or as numerous as yours. Although smaller, they are still a right pain. Does any one know exactly what their purpose in the insect kingdom is?Are they resposible for polination etc. |

What are midgies in Scotland? Here in America midgies are little miniature tootsie rolls. So, no, we don't get eaten alive by midgies, that would just be weird.
But, we do get eaten alive by mosquitos. Well, at least down south we do. |

This?
midge ( P ) Pronunciation Key (mj)
n.
1. Any of various gnatlike flies of the family Chironomidae, found worldwide and frequently occurring in swarms near ponds and lakes.
2. Any of various similar dipteran insects, such as the biting midges of the family Ceratopogonidae.
We have gnats that are a pain sometimes, be at least where I am (north east US) we don't have much problem with these. We tend more to get eaten alive by bad mosquitoes, some species considered "aggressive biters." Lovely. |

Having experienced both Scottish and English midgies, I can assure you that your Scottish midgies are FAR WORSE!!!
We holiday in Scotland quite a lot from the North of England and they just love my husband! We go for a walk together and it seems that they prefer him to me! He just get home covered in bites!
The ones we have in England are a bit of a nuisance but yours are DREADFUL!!! Yep, Scottish midgies have the edge on our English ones! |
