Move from US to England?

I am thinking about moving to England because I watched the movie sicko, and did some research and now I want the real view from real people.

Like I know you taxes are 40% but I would be able to live with that. I mean like how much are like 3/4 bedrooms there? And cars? Does everything cost the same? I was wondering what does the government cover from the taxes? Like free medical, free college, free nanny? How many hours do you work a week? Minimum paid vacation? I mean from the movie it seemed like it would be very stress free to live there, I mean compared to the US. I mean they work you to death here, and the health insurance is ridiculous, and being in 40k debt after college is crazy by the time your 18/19! I mean I am thinking of moving there in a couple years to start a family or something, I am about to graduate from college [ auto body technician ] and was wondering how to become a permanent resident?

If you answers these you will be amazing! THANKS SO MUCH!

BTW: What is the best place to live in England or the UK?

First thing first you really need to search there history and now how things are ran over there, its a cool place to visit for a while but it is much different than the US. Not in a bad way but you will need to understand there laws. But they do have some of the best elementary schools in the world. And every thing is way more expensive there..
Hope you have a happy move.
Don't go as a health care provider you will get the short end of there health care "plan". JAMES M is a f*ck face. US colleges are way more advanced than the UK!!!! USA ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...
Stephen Fry has said it all.

40% is the higher rate.

You would earn twice as much as America, so bear that in mind.

3/4 bedrooms you are looking at 180K, or 300K in london. Between £400 and £600 a week but places over here are smaller than America.

Everything is more expensive that America, about 3 or four times as expensive. Apart from Alcohol and some groceries.

Healthcare is free in the UK. College you might have to pay for, but childcare is very cheap.

37 Hours a week is the average. Minimum paid annual leave is 23 days by law.

You would have to apply for a work visa, but try and secure employment first as they might not let you in otherwise. A UK salary would clear you debts pretty quickly, but if you lived in the UK you might not have to pay them, unless they catch up with you.

One tip, become more worldly, other than that people will love your accent.

usa the land of oppertunity

Being the Army Bratt born and bred that I am, I have lived in England before, but it was with army rates. My aunt is living their currently but also on army rates. What you need to remember is that the pound far outweighs the dollar, by a LOT. However, I love the culture, the walking everywhere and stuff. It's great. Ripon is an adorable village if you're looking for a particular place to live.

University is cheaper here, but if you're an international studuent you'll probably pay about 5 times the cost. Living cost varies dramatically depending on where in England you want to live... London and surrounding areas are very expensive but it's a bit cheaper to buy/rent up north.

i can answer this in one statement

Seriously, stay away from the UK, it really is in a bad state at the moment and you will regret it.

i wish i didnt live here

Our taxes are not 40%, where did you get that from? Income tax and NI is approx 25%.

Our healthcare system is free- however in England you have to pay for prescriptions if you can can afford it (pensioners, students and those with v. little incomes get prescriptions for free). In Wales nobody pays for prescriptions, I'm not sure about Scotland. Neither university nor nannies are free. You get a loan for universities and tution fees are based on the income of your parents (if you still live with them)- however a lot of people get loans for this as well. You only have a nanny if you can afford to pay for one- child care is quite expensive in the UK.

You can buy cars pretty easily over here- the cost depends on what you want, although petrol is quite expensive. The cost of a house depends on where you live. As a rule the south is noramlly more expensive than the north, and cities are more expensive than towns- depending on the area. London is extremely expensive!

We still have to work hard over here- I might be worth coming over on a temporary working visa to get a feel for the place. Visa are applied for through the UK home office. The best way would be to find companies in the UK that would sponser you to work for them over here- once here you could apply for permanent residency. If you work full time (37.5 hours a week) then you are entitled to at least 24 days of holiday a year.

I hope this helps...

40% is for the higher earners so depending on how much you earn you will pay a lower tax

It is very expensive to get a house at the moment but again that will depend on how much you earn

We have "free" health care in the NHS but that is paid for by tax and National insurance contributions out of your wages (You have to pay NI and have an NI card to be able to work in UK as far as I am aware and I work in Payroll and human resources unless your on a temp Visa) the average working week is 40 hours and again depending on who you work for the Statory holiday is 20 days plus your 8 bank holidays but some places may give their staff more after a certain amount of time being employed there.

You do get free education but have to pay for Uni fees unless you go to Scotland where the English pay for them to go to Uni as well (Fact the English subsidise the Scottish tax not their fault but the English Governments) They also get free prescriptions unlike the English but again that is our Government and not their fault.

It's only 40% if you're a high earner. I don't think you would get a free nanny. You might get financial help with child care such as child minder. You have to be a single mother here if you want everything free. You even get given a house almost straight away if you're one of those.

It depends what college for the cost. A college of further education to learn a trade or other things is free for people under 19. A university has tuition fees of 3000 but tthey can be reduced depending on the financial status. It's different all over, the same as the USA is different all over.

It's nice in the summer here as it gets light at 3am and doesn't get dark until 10.30pm. I love midsummer. Winter has short days though. I like it in the south of England. Cornwall in the south west has the best beaches. Scotland isn't as warm.

don't bother it's crap and you will get nowhere unless you have 30 degree's, polish, muslim

ok i didnt even read all that stuff above but the UK is way better than the US. You get free healthcare and a way better education, lets face it americans are kinda dumb no offence. But if you do want to move somewhere go to Canada, you now that secret government conspiracy, "Canada doesnt exist what are you talking about." By the way we don't live in igloos, i havent even seen a real igloo. BTW we have free healthcare too and our tax is 14% and not 40%. Or you can go to Alberta where the tax is only 7% however stuff is a bit more expensive, but the minimum wage is higher too. k hope this crazy Canadian has given you some knowledge you can spread all around america. bye bye

EH!!

PS you may want to stop using like every sentence it sounds kinda childish

Depends how much you earn taxes start at 20% for most people. Renting a house is a better option in the cities and health care is free.

Not having to EVER pay for health insurance and health care period will more then likely balance that Tax babe. Gas would be my primary worry. The word "commute" In England is much more substantial then in the US. I'd try and find employment close to my residence.

marry me, then you can live here.. lol.

move to bristol :D

Stephen Fry
In England we have 10 months of winter and 2 months of bad weather. Its cold and dark and it rains and rains and it is cold, dark rain. Unless you go to the beach then its cold, dark and windy. In England we still live in black and white like the old movies. Houses are small and damp like the people, cars are tiny because petrol is $11 a gallon. Health care is cheap but the hospitals are dirty. panel beater earn about $15 an hour. On the plus side we have the Queen.

On the whole I would say Andrew above makes fair point apart from the weather in Scotland is worse and the wages lower.

great

jesse_hight
i hope that u arent moveing to london, to much terrorism

Cristobal Salvaje
you should think more on being able to naturalize there...since 9/11 it isnt too easy

Dave and Rebel G
Taxes are higher and owning a car is a luxury, Gas prices are higher and there are numerous car and road taxes. There are few freebies from the government and you have to be a national to qualify for them. It takes time to actually change your citizenship so you will need to be prepared to pay your own expenses until then. Contact your local consulate office and they can tell you exactly what you need to do.
