You could do a lot worse. I lived in the city for over 10 years. One striking thing about the city these days is crime is down, the city appears to continue to grow in affluence. It is now one of the richest cities in England and has a long history. Many people find it charming as the people are not as quick to anger in some cities--- that isn't to say they are pushovers. But the rough areas of the city aren't comparable to other cities. Many of them are undergoing development as crime as recently reduced alongside increased prosperity and effective policing.
It is a great city if you like the outdoors, the city is surrounded by the countryside and also has large areas of public space: the largest of which is the downs. Outside the city it is easy to head to Wales or Bath for the day, many though don't need to leave the city.
Recently the city has seen a large amount of inward investment including more large department stores moving into the city. For shopping Bristol and it's out of Town shopping centre at Cribbs Causeway are selling themselves as the regional shopping center where people from all over the south west of england would head. As far as the arts are concerned there are different venues although funding for the arts has come under pressure in recent years. Bristol people I've found to have a lot of pride in their city and will demonstrate against what they don't like and organise events they do like. Examples of this:
- They have a history of rioting against laws and taxes they don't like.
- They have organized their own music festival not-for-profit for years.
The city has a number of industries which shape the its character. The arts: broadcasting, animation and contemporary art. It's culinary credentials are growing too. It is possible to source quite a lot of fresh ingredients locally and is very easy to eat organically in the city if you are that way minded.
Other industries such as aviation, mean that the city has a proud history with aircraft and there reportedly will be a concorde museum at some point. Major parts of concorde were built in the city. The city also has the world largest hot-air balloon malefactor: every year in the summer there is a large balloon festival in the city which is well turned out.
Other areas such as technology and finance mean that large company sponsors back local events and festivals. |

ignore all those idiots going on about drugs and gangs. yeah there's a history of drug crime etc in Bristol but there is in every other big city on earth. i'm sure you're big enough to look after yourself. they must be really sheltered 'oh my god i've never seen a black person before...' basically Bristol is really culturally diverse, with african and asian communities, and apart from that has 2 universities so there's a great youth culture. the centre will be amazing for shopping when cabot circus is open at the end of october and it's right by the countryside like somerset (where i live) and wiltshire. the people are generally really friendly, it's a clean metropolitan city with some slovely posh restaurants etc and there's always loads going on! |

Wow lucky you I love Bristol I went to University there!
It is very hilly city in the South West near the border to Wales, full of old buildings and museums and art galleries, lots of great music and very diverse. It's a port city with really nice docks with good food and bars.
Have fun! :-) |

Bristol is a great place to live, please dont listen to people when they say you will get shot in St. Pauls and Stapleton Road, its a load of rubbish. Yes there is drugs and guns about but not as bad as people think. My advice is don't go to St. Pauls but Stapleton Road is OK. Bristol is very diverse, you will love it. I live in Bristol and I'm also a police officer. |

Leave this place, run

Empress is right, but Bristol can be unsafe just like any place for someone stupid enough to look the tourist victim. So don't look too lost, even if does make you look cute. Ask the tourist information office before you go to send you all sorts of brochures. |

Best and most expensive place to live is Clifton. There isn't too much crime (it is a city after all). You are only a few minutes from beautiful countryside and beaches and there is good public transport (buses and trains) and many cylce paths.
You can visit a zoo, rock climb in a church, skate or visit the theatre! |

I was born and grew up in Bristol.
Bristol is no worse that any other European city and a lot better that most of them, people have move to Bristol from all over the United Kingdom and the world, very few leave again, my own father move here from Scotland and never left.
Bristol is multi-cultural with the problems that brings but, the decence people of all nationalities are working together and little by little things are improving, there is a drug problem as pointed out by others but show me a city anywhere in the world that dosen't have a similar problem, most normal people like myself never see that side city life even though we know its there.
The city itself is full of culture, old buildings mixed with new, the old city docks which comes right into the centre of the city is now used for leasure, the central shopping area is just coming to the end of a massive makeover making it double its original size with lots of new shops.
Travel 20-30 minutes in any direction from the centre and your'll be in the country side, another 40 minutes to south west and you reach the coast and the sea side town of Weston-Super-mare, another 30 minutes to the east and your're in the goergean city of Bath.
Bristol has its own airport with flights going Europe and America. there are two main line railway stations the more central historic Temple Meads and the more modern Parkway in the north of the city, the motorway network is on the edge of the city giving road access to all parts of the country
.
Type Bristol England into your computer there are web sites that will show and tell more about Bristol, the best thing is to come and see for yourself what there is to offer you.
Best of luck. |

There are a few areas such as St Paul's or Stapleton Road with Jamaican, yardie drug dealers where you can get shot. I'm not a tourist, but I was fearing for my life just shopping in Stapleton Road as I was the only white person and everybody was looking at me in a strange way and men were shouting at me in the street. I go to Bristol for tutorials and don't like it that much, although I heard there are nice parts so maybe I have the wrong impression. |

Don't.
It's a hell hole of a city full of drugs, crime and filth.
There are much better places to live like Exeter. |
