Mr. Owl

Moving to England. A question to Brits?

Hi,

I live in a small Northeuropean country and I've been thinking of moving to England. I haven't been to England, but I seem to like it more than my home country.

I can find a job here, it's not the reason why I want to move. I just don't like my country - people don't behave, our laws are stupid, winters are way too cold and so on..

So, I'm flying to England in July but I don't know what to expect. Will I be accepted by your society? Well, I'll "steal" a job there and that's not nice..

Thanks

Keep out of London or Slough. They have a very large immigrant popupation already and may not make you welcome.

Go somewhere north of London into a medium size town and join in with the locals. If they see that you are working and willing to pay your taxes and so on, they will welcome you.

By the way, our winters may not be so cold as yours but they will be very much wetter. You may not like that.

Good luck.

move to bristol it is the most enjoyable place to live you will not have a problem finding a job there are so many places to see and visit you will love it all the people are friendly and kind they will make you feel at home it is nice to see some one willing to do things for them selfs .
so you will be more than welcome from people in the uk

ScientistX
Lancashire is lovely! You would be welcomed by everyone generally as foreigners are especially if you are polite which they usually are. Different parts are different depending on what you like or dont like, the North is generally friendlier than the south and if you go to London please dont think thats how most English people act! So you have been warned (cos they are all moody there!).

The downsides to this country is that people dont behave, the laws are stupid and the winters are cold and so on...

you will encounter racists because they are everywhere and they will prob accuse you of stupid things but there are good people here, trust me

What skills can you bring with you? jobs in the uk are not easy to find & most dont pay very well, Is it just you or your family as well?
Either way welcome to the uk.

People don't always behave in England either, but we do know how to queue properly!

If you make an effort to improve your spoken English (assuming you're not already fully fluent) and to intergrate properly you should be widely accepted. You'll always come across stupid people wherever you go who resent 'outsiders' but ignore them - they're in the minority!

Buy the Rough Guide to Britain (a travel book) - read up about the different parts as England varies greatly from North to South and East to West!

I hope you find it to your liking!

A lot depends on where you are coming here to live,if you live near me as long as you are decent and friendly you will get on fine, and of course as you say ,you will be working,so thats a bonus.

People in england are very excepting & its a very multicultural place (well it is in london where i live) It depends alot on where your going to in England. Go to the citys (London, Birmingham, Manchester etc.) for a busy, rushed lifestyle, its nice but sometimes its too fast. The people are generally very accepting.
The countryside/ coast (Cornwall, Devon.. etc.) Is also friendly, but slower & quiter. Less crime, more 'communitys'
Good luck in england!! x

Come and move to Lincolnshire, you'd be made very welcome. And everyone has the right to earn a living.

Hi,

Emigration, or should I say, 'immigration' is a well observed pattern of behaviour for many of us. I, for instance now live in Spain, but I was born and grew up in England.

As with most countries, the people who live in more rural areas are generally more welcoming then those in cities. This will be true, I'm sure you'll agree even in your own country.

Unfortunately most of the work that is available will be in the cities or larger industrial towns. So you have to make a choice when you decide where to go to in England when you settle.

If you are already a citizen of an EU country you have an absolute right to live and work in England. People, generally, will accept you, especially if your knowledge of the English language is good. (The English are not known for a wide knowledge of other languages)

I sincerely hope you find what you are looking for in England, and that you successfully find work and accomodation, etc.

It isn't normal for people to move to England because of the weather! England can be wet and miserable part of the year, then too hot for a month or so, then too cold, and so on...Hence my now living in Spain!

But the welcome should be warm and if you keep away from the very large urban conubations you should find no discrimination or resentment.

Good luck

BobSpain

You will be easily accepted if you come to contribute to our country and not to sponge off the benefits system.

Welcome friend

" .... people don't behave, our laws are stupid, winters are way too cold and so on.. "..this is exactly the same in England so don't delude yourself.
If you want to come here to experience England (good and bad) then do so.....but do not come here thinking it will be some sort of paradise.

jay jay
You might be in for a shock as you say people do not behave in your country look out for a typical Friday or Saturday night in the UK.
Jobs are available depending on how good your English is and based on what you have typed for this question you might do ok.

paddymayblue
Everyone welcome

Work hard and have fun.

That's what we do

greybeard
If you are the sort of person to work hard and make a go of life you will do well almost anywhere. The Uk is a land of opportunity. I am English so are biased. I have lived in Wales and Scotland. I am sure that the English have less predudices than than either Welsh or Scots

as long as you work and pay your taxes and don't just lie around all day taking up the money we pay for our taxes, but I'm sure you won't do that.
