ex. what should I wear, what are the seasons like, I'll be living just outside of London, but not IN it, what do you think will be the biggest adjustment, etc

the people are all pretty friendly here, so you will have help at hand at all times. One thing i always find hard when i go to new countries is knowing when and how much to tip in restaurant or taxi situations! We generally dont tip taxi drivers unless they're really friendly or its a long journey and in restaurants i always tip £1 per person thats eating. We dont really tip in bars either. hope you like England and good luck!

You are most Welcome . All big cities have their unsafe areas, so avoid those if you are in a city. Our Underground system is fast, efficient and friendly. There is much you will just love and some you might be wondering about. Our Policemen do not carry Guns but are approachable and Friendly. We are very tolerant here and sometimes to the point of allowing people to get away with being insulting and rude about our own land. We do have a sense of humour .Enjoy you stay with us

uk is a great place to spend a year. you will want to go back after a year, probably because of the weather, but mainly, the 'real' english folk are dissapearing. im guessing you will be staying in a large city? well they are now overrun by asians, blacks and eastern europeans! if you want to taste the real england, then travel further down the south coast where they have not yet ruined.
good luck.

We moan a lot and are good at queueing, in general very nice people.
But watch out for chavs.. do you have them in California? I'm not sure...

Oh, and we speak English, not American.

There will also be less obese people about.

These things may take time to get used to...

depends on where you're moving to, I know England does not look very big but it's not teeny.

just be prepared for the horrible wet weather.

Claire
You get used to the weather but not to the deficient public infrastructures. People are nice.

Be prepared for the weather. In my travels Britain has the most unpredictable weather ever. by the way, the shops close very early here in england.

You will enjoy living here. We are very friendly people. The weather is not as bad as you expect it too be. But winter is cold compared to Calif. London is full of foreigners, there are 200 languages spoken here and so you will meet people from all over the world. It is a safe place to be, on the whole, it is considered to be the safest large city in the world. You should not meet any animosity because you are American, but please be a quiet American. As a woman you will be able to walk into a pub and not be pestered by a man. Our police really are wonderful and never hesitate to approach one. Our hospitals are fantastic, despite what you may read in the papers. If you want to get a feel for the place go to bbc.co.uk/news and click on local areas. I live in London and I love it!

You don't say where you will be living and I hope that if it's in London you are getting well paid! The weather you will find is the main difference, as one of your countrywomen said to me "England?, great country if you can put a roof on it".What I would say to you, is to enjoy the culture both specific and generic and use the opportunity to see other places not just London. Go to the Cotswolds, Stratford, York etc, visit the North East and see all the castles, go to Edinburgh and see also some of Scotland, a little tip on the latter, visit South West Scotland, particularly Gatehouse of Fleet, great food and friendly people. Whatever you do, keep an open mind and enjoy your stay.

come down south to dorset. its 100 miles from london. its full of eastern europeans but not many other different races. we are friendly, its very safe and clean . we dont shoot people, the coast is magnificent and the country villages are so quaint. you will love it

Bring a brolly it always rains. Mind you great weather just now.

Which bit of England are you moving to? It's got a lot more culture and history than one of your states does. There are a lot of regional accents (I remember one American telling me that they'd seen a programme called Last of the Summer Wine that was exported and they couldn't understand a word because of the thick accents) - you have one accent for half your country, we have one accent for a town.

People don't tend to look all that kindly on others owning guns, unless you live in the countryside.

Oh, and we don't all know the Queen, have corgies, fly the Union Jack, go fox hunting and have cut glass accents.

Apparently the reason Americans think of us as unfriendly is that it's impossible to smile whilst speaking with a british accent.

Whilst you're at it we speak proper English not the butchery that you call English. For example when you say bum you mean tramp, when we say bum we mean ****.

BBC provides the best TV programmes, you have to pay £100-odd a year to watch ANY TV but it is worth it. BBC programmes are mostly very high quality (Doctor Who is not to be missed) and all advert free. You can get a freeview box which is £40 or so (one off, no subscription) and gives you an extra 30 or so channels.
