It depends how much north you go but I see the most homless guys on the streets in LONDON!! and there are people who have money everywhere you look up and down the UK.
Things are much cheaper in the North London is a BIG RIPP OFF!! |

The North of the UK is Scotland!

obviously its wrong. there are poor people everywhere.
people from the south may be paid more then people in the north. but the cost of living in the south is greater, so in the end, they will not be richer.
also there are some very poor people that live in the south.
also some very rich people in the north.
i could go on explaining but it sounds like you already know the truth, your friend on the other hand may need a little help. mainly with common sense?? i dunno :] |

The North of England isn't as rich as the south of the country, nor do they have access to the rich bounties of the wonderful south - the fresh foods, the excellent weather, the fine hospitals etc...
all rubbish. Just as many poor in the south. London is coming down with people living on the streets. |

When they introduced the Minimum Wage 25% of Cornwall had a pay rise! Low incomes are everywhere, including Cornwall. |

Yes, the Westcountry is one of the poorest areas in England, ( Andrew64, what you say is very true, but don't forget Devon).
All these business people who pay poor wages are nearly all "foreigners" as we call the rest of the British. The natives can't afford to set up a business, or buy a house. So many properties are purchased as holiday or retirement homes by rich "foreigners" that they are priced out of the reach of the locals.
The Westcountry has the highest water bills in the country because we have so much coastline to maintain.
No wonder so many of our young people have to move away. |

This is an over simplification of the facts.
There are pockets in the south that are very poor compared to the north, and areas in the north that are wealthy compared to the south.
Wealth is relative. In general it is much more expensive to live in the south than it is in the north. In England we have a minimum wage. An individual trying to exist on it in London will be much worse off than an individual trying to live on it in Sheffield, even though their wages are the same. |

poor people are all over the place |

Not true! It's all relative to what you mean by poor!
The standard of living is actually better in the north of England.
The difference in the cost of Living between the North and South makes it harder to exist on low wages in the South so being on a low income in London would make you seem poorer than the same income in Manchester.
Houses are lower in price in the North too so if you do have money it goes further making you appear better off! |

Well I would say it is, as there are lots of rich people in the North, in the same way that in the South there are still lots of poor people. The North (Whatever anyone says!) is getting better, and is probably a lot better place to live then the South, as the people are friendlier, and the cost of living is cheaper |
|

'Er indoors!!

Actually one of the poorest Counties in England is ( believe it or not ) Cornwall. The furthest South you can go in England. Despite an influx of rich people buying up houses for holiday lets, and second homes, Cornish people are paid minimum wage, the rates are higher than the rest of England, Water rates, especially, are twice as much as anywhere else, and house prices are extotionate. Poor Cornish people pay more for food, as the shopkeepers put the prices up for tourists, and the poor are forced to pay the higher prices. Public transport in many tiny Cornish villages is virtually non-existant, , and a huge vicious circle exists, whereby, people cannot afford to buy, or run a car, so therefore, cannot travel to jobs. It is said that tourism boosts the economy for Cornwall, but the only people who truly benefit, are the already rich, hoteliers, restaurant owners, and greedy people who exploit the poor by paying minimum wage, even though their businesses are booming. |

Not true,I'm from London and there's loads of poor people here. The thing is that oop North the cost of living is cheaper than the South so if Northerners come down South then yes there are poorer because they can't afford our standard of living. Similiarly if Southerners move up North they can get more for their money as they are used to London prices. |

Of course you friend is right, haven't you heard how the streets of London are paved with Gold?
While the North is full of smokey towns full of mills, polluted waterways, giant coal pit waste heaps, and crowded tenements, in ghettos filled with dispossessed agricultural workers, working in factories, 16 hours a day, 6 days a week, and paid piecemeal.
This is the 21st Century. No one is poor in the UK.
Didn't you see the TV news reports of the recent floods? Plenty of those affected claimed that they couldn't afford basic house and contents insurance, yet strangely they could all afford Sky TV at at least £30 per month. |
