You can usually get an inexpensive B&B in the Earl Court district on the west side of London on the Tube from Heathrow Airport. I've stayed there several times.

Also there are places around the British Museum that are nice. One of my favorite places, which I've stayed at several times, is the Penn Club at 21-23 Bedford Place. It is a Quaker House but not restricted to Quakers. Rooms are reasonable and they have a great breakfast. I've met Nobel Prize winners there.

If you want a cheap place - http://www.piccadillyhotel.net/ - this is the cheapest hostel in london and very central as its picadilly circus. - beds from as little as £12 per night.

Or have a look on www.hostelbookers.com this will also tell you if they have availability. This is not just for hostels but also B&Bs and Hotels.

Any Best Western in London is decently priced and the rooms are always clean and somewhat spacious. There's one that is about a click from Gatwick.
