Luton. Just 4 junctions up the M1 from Watford.

Magic Bus Driver
Elstree Aerodrome, just outside Watford.

It's a private airport, but if anyone is flying to the North-East they'll probably take you with.

Heathrow is the nearest airport - about £35 by taxi or £7.50 using the Virgin Railair bus from Watford Junction. It's about 22 or so miles
Gatwick Airport is further away (about 60 miles) but there is an hourly train service from Watford Junction to Gatwick Airport.
Luton Airport is about 30 miles away with Arriva Bus No 321 running from Watford Town Centre and Watford Junction.
