Nice places to visited near London?

I'm living in London and would like to rent a car and go somewhere near to pass the day... Does anyone know any nice places around here? Like 2/3 hours driving... thanks...

Get on the M11 and go to Cambridge for the day. It takes about 1 hour 45 mins, but be warned, the parking prices in cambridge are as bad as London. But you'll see the park and ride stops as you get nearer.

Other than that you could go to the country side, lots of nice little villages up in Suffolk.

Crikey you can go miles in 2 to 3 hours. If you set your ceiling on the Midlands for distance and say Bristol in the west then anywhere in that radius is possible. If you like history the visit the many castles or places such as Windsor, Warwick or Leeds castle in Kent. If you want to see the sea then Brighton or Bournemouth. Shopping in any of the city centres or special malls like Blue Water. Or just nice countryside and a country pub on the South Downs or Bucks. It's just endless. How about getting a book from the travel section in a bookshop. There's one called a Thousand Places to visit in Britain. Or a Readers Digest book that I've listed below on Amazing Britain.

it really depends on what sort of stuff you like or would enjoy.....personally I'll go for castles and palaces.Leeds castle in Kent and Hampton Court Palace have nice gardens, Im not sure whether it is recommended to go this time of year...but at least you can be out from the cold while your inside the buildings....or if you want to just pass the day...you dont even have to drive, just get in some of the museums - most of them are free.....if you want to drive try going to some tourists attractions: stratford-upon-avon, nottingham, stonehenge, bath...there's plenty of places to go...check out visit.britiain.com

Greenwich Park... and it's easy with the train... and hampton Court.... heard about Richmond Park or something.. didn't go, so I am not sure...

Windsor is very nice, hampton court is good fun, Henley is beautiful- or just get in the car and drive and see where you end up (but dont forget to take a map!)

Risley Gardens but not now in the Spring or summer.
Hatfield House, Hatfield......There is a nice house also at the top of Parliament Hill Fields but I cant think of the name at the moment. There is the Flask Pub at Parliament Hill and the park itself. Burnham Beeches....The Toy Village.....I cant remember the names of them all as I have flu and cant think clearly at the moment. Richmond Park with the deer...Osterley Park... also has deer. The Embankment in the evening....

Come to Yorkshire. York with it's Minster, Howarth and Bronte country,Yorkshire Dales,Whitby, Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ilkley Moor (baht 'at), and lots more steeped in history oh and I forgot Leeds for shopping

Caroline
Hmmm NICE places..... in this weather? How about a stately home but many might be shut in winter. I really dont know where to suggest. I was going to say Leeds Castle.... i will check if open.

YES! It is open but last admissions are at 3pm in November.

It is a beautiful place and worth a visit.

Oxford is nice sweetie, and you can even take a bus up there. Some of Harry Potter was filmed in Oxford and there are tons of cute little pubs and lovely archetecture.

If you want to go a bit further north then I recommend the Lake District in Yorkshire.

Amusez Bien!

Penfold
St Albans Abbey and the Roman ruins/museum there.
Whipsnade Safari Park in Bedfordshire.
Sulgrave Manor in Oxfordshire.
Walking in the Chilterns.

Take a look at http://www.visitbritain.co.uk/ for ideas.

Anywhere you like practically. Its a small country! you can be on the coast depending where you are located in London in that time. Countryside? head west, Oxford, the Thames, Henley etc more country side? head north

Its gonna be a pretty dreary weekend weather wise. You can head South down the M3, visit the New Forest, have a nice pub lunch. You could visit local towns like Southampton/Bournemouth/Poole. Take a ferry over to the Isle of White, or the hovercraft and have a day on the Island. If the Queen Mary is sailing this weekend you could take a ferry ride across the solent to Hythe and watch the QM sail out. Whatever you do, have a good one.

I went to London for 2 days before a cruise, and one place that I was sorry I didn't get to was Bath. I really wanted to get there, but ran out of time because of a bank holiday. I've heard it is really neat there, and only a few hours drive outside of London. Enjoy if you go!

Go to Norwich. Bath is very nice too. York is beautiful, you can get there in 2 hours by train, it takes longer to drive.

Theirs loads of places. By the way; the entire country is 2-3 hrs away. If you like history, go west, visit salsbury or avebury. Good night out, go to Guildford-nice bars there. Brighton makes a good day out. Stay away from Woking/ anywhere in Essex.
