One week in England - What should I do?

I am an Australian who is visiting the UK and Europe and have a week (with a car hire) to see some of England. We will have had some time in London and will be catching the ferry over to Ireland. We have never been to England but love the countryside. Can anyone suggest any ideas or nice areas (or if you are really specific BandBs or accomodation for us?). We would rather see some places well than try to see heaps of things. Thanks for your time.

I've grouped those things together that are geographically close.

1) Brighton - beautiful town; the Royal Pavillion is a must

2) Guildford & Windsor; Oxford

3) Stratford-upon-Avon; Warwick Castle
For B&B, I recommend: Travellers Rest,146 Alcester Road, Stratford-upon-Avon

4) Bournemouth; New Forest; South Dorset Coast
for this area, the Blue Shutters Hotel in Poole is quite nice

5) Winchester, Salisbury & Stonehenge
stronlgy recommended B&B: The Old Vicarage, Ampfield, Hampshire
you could also stay at The Furlongs, 18 North Drive,Littleton, Winchester

6) Bath, Wells & Cheddar Gorge

7) Cardiff - beautiful city, and best city for shopping outside London; do visit the castle

8) Portmeirion - when it comes to architectural excentricity, this village is second only to Brighton's Royal Pavillion

If you are intersted in parks/gardens, forget Sissinghurst - see Sheffield Park Gardens near Brighton instead; or visit Stourhead, in the Salisbury/Bath area.

I've ommitted Devon & Cornwall. They are very beautiful, but it'll cost you too much time and get you too far out.
Same goes for Kent: Canterbury, Dover, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Maidstone and Royal Tunbridge Wells are all very nice places, but not necessarily worth the detour.
For the same reason I haven't included any place in England that lies further north than the northern coast of Wales [like the Lake District, etc.].

One word of advice: driving through rural areas will cost you more time than you expect; this is especially true for Wales, where EVERY car journey takes much much longer than what your first estimate is!

Head for Bath, a wonderful historic city and right at the southern end of the Cotswolds. You are within easy travelling distance of some beautiful countryside and typically pretty English villages.
Bristol is a short drive away and you are quite close to Wales.

Assuming you are taking the Ireland ferry from South Wales, there are loads of fantastic places to see there. The Brecon Beacons for countryside, Cardiff for history. The Museum of Welsh Life at St Fagans is a great day out.

Have a lovely trip.

Go to the Lake District - we love going to Keswick.

We stay here: http://www.hazeldene-hotel.co.uk/

Here is a url for the village itself:

There are some lovely little pubs and walking trails in that area. You can actually walk all the way around the lake. There are boats for hire so you could do that. There's a stone circle up above the town - that's a nice little walk.

Have fun!

If you love countryside, come down to Dorset. Ours is the best. Portland Harbour is where the sailing will take place for the 2012 olympics. We have plenty of B&B's, good beaches, history, the lot.
Hope this helps

There are so many beautiful places to visit. Cornwall is one...try and go to The Lake district in Cumbria if you have a chance. Stratford Upon Avon is nice and the birthplace of Shakespeare. It depends on what your interests are really.

if your from australia make sure wherever you go you have plenty of clothes drive to the new forest down south its beautiful down here

I would suggest the part of England called 'The Marches' i.e.. the area of South Shropshire and Herefordshire close to the Welsh border where you will find some absolutely gorgeous countryside. There is the 'Long Mynd' and the'Stipperstones' near Church Stretton - elevated moorland with weird rock formations, 'Wenlock Edge', the 'Mortimer Forest' near Ludlow. (Ex poet laureate John Betjeman called Ludlow
"the most beautiful town in England"). There are several hotels in Ludlow and also the Longmynd Hotel in Church Stretton, where I have stayed many times. www.longmynd.co.uk

Well, Stratford Upon avon is always worth a look, and try and take in The Cotswolds too; Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow -on-the -Wold, and Upper and Lower slaughter are both pretty, 'chocolate box' villages. Or, go up to The Lake District.

Check out; www.bayhouselakeview.co.uk

this is a great little guest house, overlooking Lake Windermere, and within easy walking distance of the town itself. Enjoy your holiday!!
