Places to visit in London. What can you advise me to visit? |
Hello,
I will be in London with my husband and with my friends between December 30th 2008 and January 2nd.
Since the people with me have different, opposite tastes, where can I take them to?
One of them likes visiting museums and historic (or traditional) related places, whereas her wife likes going shopping and their older daughter is keen on "Hard Rock Café" bars.
As for my husband and for me, any place will please us.
So, even if we and our friends are OK to split into two small groups, what areas can we visit during our New Year's stay in London?
Thanks in advance for your answers. |

Well bugger to any sightseeing, it's all a load of rubbish.
Everyone will enjoy Camden market, it's brilliant and a taxi away. The Tate is a fantastic museum, and really interesting at that.
For the daughter, I suggest Planet Hollywood, a known celebrity hangout, and for nights, I suggest Boombox! It's brilliant, but we warned, you have to dress outrageous to get in. And I mean outrageous. |

Well you're going to be there for what 4 days?Well you'll want to squeeze in as much as possible, so you could look into some tourist bus tours, but if you prefer to do your own thin, definetely visit Buckingham Palace, the Changing of the Guard takes place frequently throughout the day (I don't know if you know what that is, it's basically some soldiers on horses swapping roles with some other soldiers on horses but I guess it's a good photo oppurtunity!), the London Eye, Big Ben/The Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London would also be perfect for your traditional-orientated friend, it makes for a whole day out. There are plenty of museums - the Science, Natural History and Imperial War Museums are probably the best but there are many others.Visit Nelson's column in Trafalgar square for more photos, and Oxford Street with plenty of shopping oppurtunities there - the 'bar' daughter might like the Ice Bar there, where your drinks are served in ice glasses and it's all cold inside and you get given a coat and things to go inside in.You could go to Harrods, Knightsbridge for more (expensive) shopping, and if you want to maybe see a musical in the West End?Or Madame Tussauds? And there's normally a big countdown on New Year's Eve at Big Ben if you want to go to that!
Well anyway that's all I can think of, you might try googling the London tourism office for more ideas! |

Just the cliché tourist attractions.
For yourself and your husband I'd suggest just wandering around the City of London (main part) and just going anywhere that takes your fancy. The London Eye is a must though, as is the theatre for at least one night.
Oh and if you're staying for New Year's be sure to be on the Thames to watch the massive firework display! |

If you want to do something on New Year's Eve I would suggest booking in advance nearer the time as most venues fill up quite quickly and it will be almost impossible to get in at the door. A lot of things will be closed on the 1st of January but I think the Natural History Museum will still be open. There may also be limited public transport but buses will still be running. Shops will be open again as usual on the 2nd. There is a Hard Rock Cafe on Piccadilly (at the bottom towards the Hyde Park end - nearest tube Green Park). Old Bond Street (Bond Street tube) is good for high end designer shopping as is Harrods and Harvey Nichols (Knightsbridge tube). For normal shops Oxford street has a mile of them and Kings Road Chelsea has a mixture of both (Sloane Square tube). For restaurants it's impossible to recommend as there are so many. Try www.toptable.co.uk for special offers and deals which can save you 50% off the food bill. For a special Indian meal try La Porte Des Indes in Old Quebec Street (Marble Arch tube), it's stunning and has a real waterfall inside it. Make sure you have an Oyster card www.tfl.gov.uk which will make travelling around the city easier. |

Head out of London towards Watford then follow the signs that say 'To the North'. Don't stop until you get there. |
