Everywhere in and around London is expensive!
Head "up North"!
The prices are better, the people are better, and the booze is better!
But it is bloody cold!

Living in London is punishingly expensive and not just in cash, it takes ages to travel about even given public transport. You can benefit from cheaper house prices in the Midlands and still get to central London in 1 hour 15 mins or so from Coventry, Leicester, Birmingham etc. by train and live in fresher air! |

If you hold a USA driving licence you may be able to drive (NOT indefinitely!) contact the DVLA in Swansea for more info.
There are NO cheap places in the south east of England. If you want to buy a home it is the most expensive region, and London is the most expensive city, you need to go to the north of England for cheaper accommodation.
It is still possible to get cheap rented accommodation in London, but only through social landlords and housing associations and these usually have long waiting lists (expect years rather than months.) |

The Medway towns are your best bet. They're located in Kent along the River Thames.
If you have a US driver's licence, you should be able to get a temporary UK licence which will be valid for 6 months (I think), during which time you'll be expected to take a UK test.
As for citizenship - check out the requirements (if any) on homeoffice.gov.uk |

I can answer you about the driver's permit. I got my permit in January '07 from AAA. I wasn't a member so it cost me $10.00 more -- about $35.00. I only needed my own DL, and there is no test.
Get in good with a local chat group friend. Perhaps they will put you up for a couple of days! |

London is more expensive (actually very), if you insist on staying in London, North London is cheaper( actually some parts, Highgate & Hampstead are very beautiful but also expensive, I'd say around Wembley area)..
the further up nrth you go is cheaper I think..
PS> this is the little that I know but others might be able to give you more info)..
also check out this ite, just type in place or postcode & it'll give u all kinds of info about the area, such as what kinds of people live there, crime rates etc..
