The longest and best journey you can take is on the Sleeper from London Euston to Fort William which takes nearly 13 hours..
The Sleeper leaves Euston at 21.15 Monday to Friday evenings and slightly earlier on Sundays (there is no Saturday service) and arrives in Fort Wiliam around 0930
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk will have the exact timings
The onboard service comprises a cabin with washing facilities - although if you travel 2nd class then you will most likely end up sharing with someone of the same sex - and seats are available too (although if taking the seating option you need to change coaches at Edinburgh at 4am)
There is also a lounge car with comfy seating and stewardess service, food isn't too bad either and is good value for money.
Now, on to the scenery!, after leaving the suburbs of Glasgow behind you will pass through the delights of Rannoch Moor which is some of the most beautiful and at the same time inhospitable areas of the UK. You will need to get up at about 7am so you don't miss anything.
You will cross moors, rivers and streams with mountains either side and the chances are you will see deers and lots of other wildlife from the windows, together with large numbers of birds of prey.
Prices for the sleeper start at around #19 if you book far enough in advance, go to http://www.firstscotrail.co.uk and click on the "Caledonian Sleeper" link and look for a section called "Bargain Berths"
Whatever route you decide on, happy travelling! |

Take a train to Aberdeen. You get to see loads of country side on the way up to Newcastle - and from there the scenery is nothing short of outstanding. Through Northumberland along the coats, into the Borders. Then once you're north of Edinburgh you are in for some treats. It takes about 7 hours (I think) but it is fantastic for scenery.
This involves no changes, and you can either fly back, or come back through Glasgow and down the West Coast. |

Euston to Glasgow, not sure if its the longest, but the route goes through the penninies and the Lake District |

I would guess the journey from London Euston to Fort William. It would be a night train so doubt you would see any scenery, particularly in winter. |

The longest journey that I can think of involving just ONE change is
London (Paddington) to Penzance, then Penzance to Edinburgh.
You will see a whole variety of scenery.
BUT, and there is always a but, ......
The journey cannot be wholly done in daylight; indeed an overnight stay in Penzance is a distinct possibility. Look on the National Rail website for journey opportunities (and the cost!) |

Would strongly recommend taking the 12.00 train from Kings Cross thru to Inverness, arriving at about 8.05 in the evening. Stay over in Inverness and then travel up to Thurso and Wick the following day and return to Inverness in time to get the sleeper back to London, arriving at 7.45 the following morning. Alternatively you could stay overnight again in Inverness and catch the through train the following morning at 7.55, arriving in London at 3.55 in the afternoon.
It will be real mix of a trip including fantastic coastal strips, mountains and very very isolated moorlands not accessible by any other mode of transport. Trains will be a mixture of modern 125mph expresses and local services stopping at small rural stations. And there are several hotels close to Inverness station. |

Before privatisation, you could go from London to Aberdeen without changing trains. Of course that was back in the 70`s, when we had a proper and cheap rail service. I don`t know what it is like now.
I could get a train from Newcastle direct to Plymouth without having to change, and the trains were always on time - give or take 10 minutes.
Memories of a long gone youth ha, ha :-) |
