Romantic retreat? (NOT BRIGHTON!!!!)?

I would like to take my boyfriend away for a night or two as he has been working really hard and needs a break, can anyone suggest anywhere in the UK, within a few hours of London that would be romantic? We have been to Brighton so many times now that somewhere different would be good.

You coul dtry the Tollgate House Hotel in Bramber - in the South Downs north of Shoreham - a lovely hotel with some very nice rooms - handy for the coast or for the countryside - nice pubs/restaurants at Steyning, Rustington, Storrington; you could even fit in a day trip to Brighton if you felt nostalgic once you were in Sussex !
Arundel is also an interesting place to visit - reachable from Bramber - and Chichester is worth a day trip too. Try to find the Bishop's Palace Gardens behind the Cathedral - a nice quiet oasis behind the town after you have browsed the shops.

Take a train to Woodbridge in Suffolk. Lovely laid back village on the River Debben with boats and great walking.

It may be a bit further away but Bath would be really good, it has everything you need, charm, romance and...the rest is between the two of you!

The most romantic spots in England are up in the Lake District with sublime landscapes, good walks, and a large choice of hotels that offer good food and warm hospitality. At this time of the year it is breathtaking, with the leaves turning, the red squirrels foraging for nuts, berries of different hues, the sheep grazing peacefully on the hillsides and waterfalls at their most spectacular. There also are less tourists now the holiday period is over so that you feel all this beauty is there just for you. Try it, you will want to go again and again. I would not have classified Brighton as a romantic venue even at the best of times.

The Cotswolds. Very relaxing and peaceful. You can amble around the countryside or stroll around the shops. My favourite village is Lower Slaughter and I think they have a hotel there.

The Malmaison in Oxford is wonderful. There are buses from Victoria every 20 minutes at peak times and they run to the middle of Oxford. The Malmaison has the sexiest moodily lit rooms with DVD's and CD's you can borrow for free from a library at reception, a gorgeous power shower and a separate (room for 2) freestanding bath with mood lighting giving the candle-lit bath feeling. www.malmaison.com

Hire somewhere totally unusual so stay for a long weekend. I hired a castle in scotland for 3 days last year for me and my boyfriend, you feel like royalty! plus there are all those rooms to...explore...lol. Scotlands a bit far from you tho i suppose so why not try Devon. have fun!

I agree with the previous answer to the say the best place to go would be the new forest, there are some lovely hotels in and around there.

oh go on, go to Brighton again. Stay at Blanch House.

We go there everytime we go away for a weekend.

Actually, last time we went somewhere different was here -

It was fantastic but not cheap!!

“Castle Cottage” bed and breakfast and Tree house offers unique romantic accommodation in a peaceful country location between the town of Petworth and the beautiful South Downs. Situated within the grounds of “Coates Castle”, a Strawberry Hill gothic mansion and surrounded by ancient woodland and pretty gardens, a warm welcome and a relaxing stay with a delicious breakfast is guaranteed. "

but it is not the cheapest way to spent a romantic weekend.
btw the B&B was the first licensed one in wales

theatre there as well in case you fancy some culture! great pubs and clubs as well and the food in some of the hotels is just fab! relatively cheap!
no trouble round there if you keep away from the clubs! great shopping as well and pasty shop!!!
good luck have fun!xx

Without a doubt, you gotta take him to the Lake District. To see all the best bits, take the car / motor bike etc. The train is quick and romantic (but pricey) and Nat Exp is a cheaper option, but weekend travel can make a lengthy journey (why not go midweek?) U could live in the lap of luxury at one of my fave hotels (Castle Green in Kendal - Best Western) which has got all the mod cons and its own pub, or rough it at a YHA for peanuts. Visit Lake District tourism website for more info. Honestly, you won't wanna come home (and a lot don't!)

Bournemouth is sort of romantic, if you want to see old couples still enjoying life. Not much of a nightlife, but for something different and slow it should be OK.
