What about the lake district.

Had a lovely weekend in the Malverns a few years ago. Stayed at The Cottage in the Wood which was then in The Good Food Guide.
IF you want to do shopping or sightseeing you have Malvern, obviously, and Worcester.
The Malvern Hills are very beautiful and the hotel nestles halfway up - we went in the winter and it snowed - had to wait for a snowplough to come and dig us out, but who cared.
They had lovely roaring fires and you could have afternoon tea sitting in comfortable chairs with large coffee tables for your cups.
As I said it was a few years back, so you need to check it out, but a weekend I'll never forget.
There is another little place, not far from Stroud in Gloucestershire, which has been used by a Royal party needing a stop-over due to bad weather and impassable roads. Can't remember its name - on the high road heading towards Bristol, I seem to recall.
You could just pick on a County which appeals and contact the relevant Tourist Information Bureau for your chosen area.

Edinburgh - its too cold to leave the hotel most of the time anyway!

I hear the Lake District is lovely but all in all I would just search for somewhere within a reasonable driving distance from yourself with a fab hotel. If you don't plan on leaving the room that much don't worry to much about where it is and go for really good value 5 star hotel instead. Often if your in a area that doesn't have a lot of sight seeing the hotel will be cheaper.

Try looking up big luxury chains of hotels and seeing what deals they have. Or there is this one website that does amazing hotels called www.mrandmrssmith.com but the hotels can be a bit expensive but very worth it!!!
