I'm from Yorkshire (and a quarter Scottish on my Mum's side)and lived in Scotland for 9 years. I recently left to go travelling.

Up until this year's world cup I would have wholeheartedly said Scotland was the best country in the UK. But I got so fed up of the anti-English sentiment during the tournament that I cannot agree any more.

I have experienced anti-English sentiment throughout my time in Scotland but not to the extent that it actually made me want to leave the country - until the world cup. When Scotland competes in a tournament, England always supports it as it does any of the home nations. Obviously if we play against each other it's every man for himself but if it's international, we're always up there for the UK teams (and the Rep of Ireland too). Sort it out guys - you've a beautiful country and a great warm-hearted nation so stop it with the whole anti-English thing. Sad to say, I probably won't go back to live there any more.

(PS Glasgow still such a great place though - any visitors should definitely take it in!)

definately...im from sunny Glasgow...Scotland with style...x

I vote for Scotland as the best country in the UK but only because I love it more than the others. It has a wild beauty about it. It has the most to see and do for visitors. It has the songs and the pipes that touch hearts all over the world and it has the friendliest and wittiest people on earth.
....... Flower of Scotland .............I miss you still.

It's a beautiful country with some amazing landscapes. My impression is that literacy and education are higher than in other parts of the UK. Scots are also some of the best inventors/engineers in the world - just look at the list of British inventions and see how many came from north of the border!

The weather is not as good as further south (though there's not a great deal in it). But there is a strong anti-english sentiment that is so marked as to be quite distasteful, and if it were directed at any other nationality would be called racism. This spoils Scotland for me.

Everyone loves our accents. Not many people are keen on the weather but it's a beautiful place and plus tartan is the hottest trend on the catwalk right now!

I'm from overcrowded filthy old London. Dont know about Scotland being the best - I think Ireland, Wales and Scotland all have equally beautiful areas to offer.

Yes! I'm from the Midlands, but loved it when I lived in Glasgow for 12 months. The Scottish people were really good to me, there were loads of places to visit and the accommodation was good value. What's the job situation up there? I'm in London at the moment, and its the complete opposite!

yup i do! but im biased as im scottish!

edi_nbu_rgh
Definitely.......I'm from Edinburgh. Currently working up in the North East of Scotland in a place called Newmacher.

?
I'm Scottish so I will probably be seen as biased, but it certainly is. The other nations have their good points but as a complete package, Scotland is the dugs baws! For example the Welsh and Irish are fiercely patriotic but theres bugger all to get excited about in these places really, to be brutally honest. Cardiff and Male voice choirs, Dublin and Guiness? Wow! And England? ENGLAND??!!! PFFF!! Morris Dancing and Football hooligans? T'RIFFIC! When the Scottish King James united the crowns of England, Ireland and Wales with his own, thats when the world as we know it really got started wasn't it? Almost all inventions that are of any importance in the world were invented by Scotsmen. What an inspirational little country we live in! Easily the best country in the whole world, and thats no idle talk!

Bobcat BJ
It depends entirely on how you are defining "best country". Certainly England is wealthier, and holds more political sway than the others, but Scotland may be regarded by many to be much more consistently scenic and the people more consistently friendly. So "best" will depend on your priorities and perspective. I'm from down south - London! But I love travelling around Scotland whenever I can. And my last girlfriend was Scottish born and bred.

geordie.lady
I`m a Geordie hence I have to say England ..My grandad was from Glasgow but he was still the generation when the Scots came down here to rape and pillage...mind I think some still do during Glasgow fortnight ..lol...
