London is a place I have never visited and never intend to either, for the very reasons you have mentioned.

Birmingham was pretty scruffy last time I went! Think it depends how much of the city you see. London was fine last couple of times I went!

Dr. Sam Johnson said he that is tired of London must be tired of life. Well, guess I must be tired of life. I was born there. I've emigrated to NZ because it's as far as you can get from there. When I was at primary school we did a Dick Whittington pantomime. Dick Whittington said the streets of London are paved with gold. A kid at the back said paved wiv dogshit more like. Very true. But believe it or not, there are filthier places than London in the UK. A recently compiled list of Britain's most miserable places put Cumbernauld, Scotland in the number 1 position. I've never been there, and can't even imagine what it must be like.

I moved to London many years ago. The first thing I did on arriving was want to leave again as quickly as possible. Great for tourists but a horrible place live in. I never felt safe there despite being in one of the 'better' parts.

There are some really nice parts to London and these are the ones that the media often portrays as being the general picture. We tend to see far more images of affluent suburbs than of squalid tenements.

I've had the fortune (or misfortune) of travelling extensively within the UK and have to agree that London is by far the scruffiest place. A general rule of thumb seems to be that the bigger the place the worse it is.

One of the problems we have in Britain is that the media is based in London and is biased in favour of it. For example, if there was a documentary on drugs they'd go to Manchester, on crime they'd go to Liverpool, on unemployment they'd go to Sheffield, on violence they'd go to Glasgow etc etc. The reality is that London comes out worst on all counts but the media detracts from the reality by focusing negative attention elsewhere.
