Should I move to England?

I have always wanted to live in England. I was born and raised in Europe, but now live in NYC. I have been thinking about moving and England is one of my choices. Is there a lot of racism in England and are the British hospitable to foreigners?

I think there isn't that much racism and people do seem cold but i find they always try to help you. If your moving there though, you'll get use to everything. I lived there for three months, and by the end everything was good except i missed going to a sunny beach =D

The British are not aloof at all! When you get to know us we are really friendly people- it's just the grumpy people who can't be bothered that give us a bad name thanks! The thing that you have to remember about English people is that there are some things that we like to have a certain way (like queueing, everyone queues here and everyone says please and thank you, otherwise you are considered rude). We are a lot friendlier and laid back than other people are lead to believe.

From what I've witnessed, there isn't a lot of racism in England, not any that I have come across anyways. There is more racism in the big cities (except Birmingham and other multi-cultural places) but on the whole people just get on with their lives and don't bother with stupid things like racism.

In terms of hospitality, English people will go out of their way for you on the whole if you are nice to them (and don't forget polite!)

Just make sure that you are prepared to talk about the weather |(it rains lots in Winter) and can queue 'properly' and you'll be fine!

British people are cold BUT HONEST. That's one thing i admire about them. They are a unique nation.

A lot of British hate the Americans so that is why I think a lot of people answering this say they seem unfriendly but as long as you were raised in europe you will be alright. .

Whether you will allowed into the UK depends what Nationality you have. If you have US nationality then it won't be easy as you will require a visa and a work permit. Unless you have skills that are in demand and cannot be filled by an EC citizen you are not likely to get a permit.

If your passport is from an EC member country then you can come at any time. Bear in mind that the UK has over 2 million unemployed so finding a job will not be easy. Cost of living is very high too.

That said the British people are a pretty friendly bunch. Racism is not unknown but it's not a great problem. Certainly less of a problem than most countries, USA included. The dialects can be difficult to understand expecially in cities like Liverpool, Newcastle or Birmingham. If you can crack that you'll be OK.

Its not racism you need to worry about here..its the super-high cost of everything...taxes, food ,fuel, and property..oh and the gloomy weather and the miserable people!!! I would gladly swap with you!

Yes, but I wouldn't go to London...It's okay, but not to live there.

I'm from the Royal County of Berkshire.

And yes, we're very polite, and we value manners above all. We love our Queen and our history/customs. You won't get any trouble unless you go looking for it. We can be seen as cold but honest, which to some degree is true, I mean, in America everyone lets their feelings well known, while in England, we keep it to ourselves and can be in great mental or physical pain and not show it. But that means any promise we make, we will fulfil.

Well it depends.
First off in my opinion there isn't a whole lot of racism over here.
Of course you hear of the occasional thing, but generally providing you do not bother them, they wont bother you.
Besides the fact in the last 4 years about 5 terrorist have been found in my area, its pretty stable lol.
But in all seriousness, racism isn't a huge problem where I'm from.

In regards to being hospitable it really depends again.
I don't think in regards to being hospitable that we are anything special.
I enjoy living in the UK, maybe you should come over for a trial month.
Don't you enjoy living in NYC ?

candyapplecat
Why don't you visit england and see if you like it. I agree, the English are a bit aloof.

lisakieren10
please swap with me england is a shithole

Fishing cats 4 life
What ever you do don't move to england, noone here is friendly, racism is still a problem and the kids smash and egg your house, the streets are dirty and are rarely cleaned, we're suffering from the credit crunch just as much as you, and it always rains here.
if i were you i'd rather stay in the US or move somewhere nicer like Austrailia or somewhere else in europe
