Should the age be raised for driving?(UK Question)

What age do you think a person should be before they are allowed to hold a driving license and start driving.

Yes, I think it should be raised to 18 before they can hold a provisional license, with a minimum of a year of driving lessons before they can take a test. Then I would make it compulsory to have the green "P" plate for a year after they pass. I also think there should be a cap on the number of tests they can have. After 5 fails, they shouldn't be allowed to carry on as they are obviously too dangerous to drive. *LOL*
It would certainly cut down the amount of young drivers being needlessly killed from inadequate driving skills!

The age is probably ok but in Northern Ireland when you pass your test you have to display 'R plates' for a year.

It means youre a restricted driver and (if I remember right) you can only drive at a maximum speed of 45mph. It also means other drivers are aware that you are inexperienced.

Birchall18
I dont think they should change the age, they should just make every driver do some sought of test that determines what kind of person they are, so theres less dickheads on the road who really dont care and only people who want to drive safely.

Poor driving and "young person" accidents are nothing really to do with age... It's to do with stupidity and modern "youff Kultur"... 9 out 10 times you'll find the same people dying in these car wrecks are the same idiots listening to Dizzee Rascal and drinking lambrini whilst "hanging" or "Chilling" or some other such **** with their "mates" in their new and paid for by dad blinged up 1.2ltr corsa... Funnily enough you'll find the next lot of adults dying to be exactly the same type of person.

So no they don't need to raise the age limit... just the intelligence and common sense limits.

I don't think so. Being sixteen myself, i'll be starting my lessons next month, and I know that i'm too nervous to even go over a speed limit by a mile, never mind wreckless driving or drinking. I don't think all young drivers are careless, it seems to be more stupid boys, who go out, drink too much and speed to impress their friends, and then accidents start.

moii
I think 17's a perfectly fair and good age to allow someone to drive, yeah some are wreckless drivers when they're young.. but the majority are good drivers so these shouldn't be penalised for the acts of others!

raapau
it should stay the same, they want to start taking some of the very old drivers off the road, some of them can barely see where there going, and they certainly don't understand the rules of the road, there's more car crime because we have the most unbelievable amount of cars on the road nowadays, if any young people abuse having a driving license, and want to mess about on the roads they should be made to take there test again as punishment, nothing seems to deter them ,they just laugh at the police, we tend to talk a lot and do nothing in this country

Tom M
17's fair it's just some people they should stop old people driving they cause they drive so slow and always brake and cause loads of problems. No offence to old people.

blenyuk
i would lower the age to 16 and make driving a part of young peoples education like in amarica,if they pass the test thats just fine with me.but with gas 10 bucks a gallon in england and getting insured is just about impossible ,its only for rich kids anyway regardless of age.
