well if you would consider wales, there is a gorgeous seaside small quite town called burry port, there is also a national park called pembry national park, with some of the war trenches still there. Its only 15 minutes from llanelli which has just been developed with a massive shopping complex, and also the best sweet shop in the world!! p.s the welsh people are also very friendly, i'm been many times on holiday.

here are some pictures.....

The Lake District is one of the largest National Trust parks in the country... the other being the New Forest in Hampshire.

Most people think the Lake District is beautiful- it's full of lakes (oddly enough) and a lot of little towns.

Personally, I don't like being damp all the time, and I am allergic to the sight of grass. Roll on city life

Any place in the High Peak is quite nice and very quiet compared to a lot of other towns. Glossop and New Mills are nice.

Bakewell is nice, but it has the A6 running through it so the road is a bit busy. Its nice to sit on the riverbank and watch the river teaming with trout in the centre of town.

Knaresborough

You have the Dales and Moors close by you. York is a short drive away and Leeds is not too far. You are close the the spa town Harrogate.

wareham in dorset is a pretty little town(look on google or flickr) with a small quay by the river
the new forest in dorset and hampshire is designated a national park and has wild horses and is beautiful esp in spring and autumn

Quite a few people have said the South West, and I'd agree. Sidmouth in Devon is a lovely, quiet old-fashioned seaside town, and around that area, near Exeter, you have National Trust properties (which are buildings and parklands that are protected and open to visitors).

Buxton and Glossop are pretty quiet and nice towns both very near the Peak District. I find them desirable places to live because you have both the countryside and city nearby. Both have good train links to Manchester if you want to work and have fun in the city. Glossop also has the Woodhead and Snake passes linking to South Yorkshire (Sheffield, Barnsley, etc).

The downside though is that house prices and rental prices are very high (all over the High Peak), commuting to work is a nightmare if you don't drive and you might miss out things that you like about being in a busy town (like the nightlife). I'd be very careful making the choice whether to live in the countryside because it might not be for you.
