none smokers cannot reply....in other words you only want to hear from people who agree with you. This being so, why bother asking the question? |

We have to go outside when we want a ciggy. You're only way is to stay home. There is no place that's exempt from the ban! You're not even allowed to smoke in a bus shelter! |

im a smoker, and this law doesnt worry me at all really.... if i want a cig il just go somewhere outside and have one.... i dont tend to smoke round people who dont smoke anyway, because i dont think its very nice, while its my choice to smoke its theirs not too, so i dont mind going somewhere where people dont have to breath my smoke |

I'm not in the UK but I would think if they wanted to sell cigarettes or cigars (here the government gets tax money from cigarettes...I suppose from cigars too) they would set up private clubs to smoke in like the USA does. |

Non-smokers do not bother to reply - damned cheek! If I want to reply, I will - and if you don't like the smoking ban, then stay away. If we've done without the honour of your presence for 40 years without coming to much harm, I'm sure we won't miss you for the rest of your life so stay in Australia.
Oh, and yes, I AM a smoker, but I will have to abide by the law, just like I can't go around murdering people, even though there are one or two I'd like to ! ! ! |

Some local authorities have already banned smoking at work and after July 1st (as has been stated) it will be illegal to smoke in any public place.
On the face of it, this is so people who don't smoke aren't affected by those who do, which is fair enough. It's a bit hypocritical of the government though - they are still clawing vast sums from the sale of tobacco - so their championing of the nations health is a bit skewed.
To promote this legislation as "a breath of fresh air" is a bit misleading too - the methane emissions from a couple of hundred sweaty clubbers could hardly been seen as "fresh". |

Most pubs have little enclosures on the side where you can still smoke but it's still a load of crap because you have to get up and leave friends. Last time I went home, the pubs had conservatories with heating and tv's built onto te side. Another example of England going down the pan! |

The smoking ban is not draconian.
Smoke free pubs and restaurants are much more pleasant. Many smokers actually say they prefer the smoke free air to breath in non-smoking bars and restaurants. But then there are the persistent few who think it is their right to pollute the air for everybody around them. We all retain the right to pass wind with the most offensive smell possible in such a case.
Yeah you can go smoke outside and some pubs provide outside patios for that purpose. If you think a simple smoking ban is draconian consider that in Spain if you throw a cigarette butt out the car window (and get caught) it is not only an automatic fine but also points on your license. The rationale there is that too many fires have been caused by lighted cigarettes thrown into dry grass. |

I believe you have to stand(or sit) outside to enjoy a smoke with your pint but you are more than welcome to enjoy both in the comfort of your own or someone else's private property! |

Stay at home John, we're looking forward to some clean air. It's not a "draconian" law, it's incredibly popular - most English people plan to start going out again in July. The Scots and Irish have been smoke free for ages. And as someone said above - why specify that you only want to hear from people who smoke, and therefore agree with you ? Don't want to hear the truth, do you ? |

I live in NZ they introduced this law about 4 years ago everyone reacted as you, but to be fair 4 years on it is sweet as.
Smokers don't mind going outside it is nice to come home and not smell like smoke (and yes i did smoke)
its and adjustment but makes a huge difference to going out in a good way!! |

Hi there John, You have heard correctly. From July 1st there will be a smoking ban in all public places...not just pubs. I totally agree with you, it is a draconian law, and typical of the nanny culture that has crept into British society. I really dont know what the smoking tax payers will do about it. And I dont know how the £50 fines are going to be enforced on those that are caught smoking in a public place. Whilst I agree that we should consider non smokers, we should be able to have our choice too! I also agree with Nexus6...this is hypocrisy when the government are still raking in the extortionate amount of revenue that they are accruing through taxes on cigarettes. They say that the smoking ban will be reviewed after 3 years! PAH! Lets see what ensues eh???? |

a lot of pubs are putting in expensive outdoor heated covered area's.to get round the ban.
what happened to democracy ,God knows
I believe as much harm is done by emissions from lorries buses and cars......drink rots the liver
Drink drivers kill people in accidents I hear that the government will also be banning sex soon in case we have a baby, and secondary child wailing causes headaches. |

It going to happen and there is not a thing you can do about it. Its a good thing. Smoking is bad for your health and is unpleasant. Its such a good idea to stop smoking in public places, to celebrate I am going to the local on July 1st.
I don't know if you noticed, but there was hardly any disagreement when the government announced the plan, so obviously it is a move welcomed by all. |

it's no bother, really.
yes there's no smoking in pubs from Jul 1.
also no smoking in your own home if you want a visit from social workers etc.
i might start going out again. |

Stay where you are... we have too many nicotine addicts here already who think they have a 'right' to poison other people,to make their hair and clothes smell and to spoil their meal or drink.Thank God their time has come...poison yourself if you must, but leave others out of it.
To Silvie...Yes, drink does damage your liver but at least alcoholics don't force it down the throats of non-drinkers.
Alcoholics poison themselves, smokers poison others too.
As for democracy the vast majority of people here are non-smokers and are in agreement with the ban.
Marie S..hurray, a thoughtful smoker, if everyone was like you this law wouldn't have had to have been brought in.
Beastie..the man did not say that you would get a visit from a social worker if you smoked in your home, only that IF you did have a social worker visiting your home you couldn't smoke..huge difference. (by the way breathe (the verb) has an 'e' whereas breath (the noun) hasn't)
Amsterdam..Don't forget Wales..we've been smoke free for a while already too. |

May I respectfully suggest that if you don't like it, don't bother coming? I think if you've been out of the country for forty years you've kind of lost the right to comment on anything the government here introduces, since it's clearly not your home.
Your right to smoke does not ride over my right not to breath in what you breath out, and I've got as much right as a non smoker to be in the pub that you want to smoke in.
Oh, and the guy that said smoking in your own home will get a visit from social workers.... Don't be daft. |
