Summer in london?!?!?!? |
im a university student in california and some friends of mine and i are planning a big trip to europe this summer. almost a quarter of which will be spent in london, is that such a good idea? we are somewhat divided on the issue, there are about 8 of us going and 3 say that we shouldnt spend so much time in the UK because it is an english speaking country and essentially it wont be that different from the United States ( i dont so much agree with that, especially because they have never been to london) but i really want to experience the different cultures firsthand and interact with as many different types of people i can. ( and if im lucky maybe meeta european cutie while im there) . Also, we are all aware of the negative steroetypes americans are given, most are probably desevered, and if we are ever confronted with a political discussion, we wil most likely agree with everything thrown at us, as we are californians, the most liberal of our compatriots. :) someone please help?! thx |

If you do spend the majority of your time in London, you might consider renting an apartment for that time. If you do go abroad you will still have a home base to come back to, in a country where you do speak the language.
There are a lot of different areas in London you can live in affordably, and it is the best way to actually mix into the city - and not simply be a "tourist."
Good luck! |

Because there is so much to see and do in London and the outskirts, I think you will be fine. And not having to deal with the language barrier is a huge help. I was there last year and wish I could have stayed alot longer. It is just an awesome city. The pubs are fantastic. Plus you can take the train over to Paris and other places without any difficulty. It's not that far. Remember they are use to tourist, they just kinda tolerate us. Being young like you are you will have a blast. And the girls will love your accent. Just wear lots of American clothing so the girls will know right away you are American. |

You will have fun in London, and don't worry about being stereotyped as Americans. You will be welcomed and not judged! It is different of course, but speaking the same language will make it easy to overcome that. I'm as patriotic as the next guy, but I have to say, it's ripoffville in London. So don't buy stuff like soft drinks, ice cream and things on the street. Those guys are crooks! You will love it here, and it's gonna be hot, hot, hot this summer as well. By the way guys, I live in Peterborough! The traffic is TOO much for me in the Capital! |

London is a good place to visit and there is plenty to do. It is not like being in America, so don't think that by spending a while in London it will be just like being at home.
Where you decide to spend your time will depend on what you want to get out of travelling. If you want to feel as though you have "seen Europe" then sticking in London is not going to do that for you. There is also a lot more to the UK than just London.
I can't speak any foreign languages but have never had any problems in other countries in Europe. Most people across Europe, or certainly in big cities, can speak English fluently. You might want to have a phrase book for a particular country though because it is generally polite to at least try to speak in that countries language! If it was me I would see as much of Europe as possible rather than spending a lot of time in one place.
I live in London and I would be really surprised if you got any hassle for being American. People in the UK like Americans and London is a cosmopolitan city. You might get an occasional joke about George Bush but that's about it. |

I would suggest to you that not all of it should be spent in London. Yes you can use london as a base, but try some of the other things that the UK has to offer, there are loads and loads to see and do.
Have a look at some of the sites like The National Trust, English Heritage, English Tourist Board.
If you cant afford a hire car, try to get a Rail pass that will allow you travel over the UK.
The US Stereotype is not as bad as it used to be over here, same as the English stereotype you have of us. However dont be too brash, abrasive and watch out for the British Reserve and Caution.
Enjoy your Holiday |

No, its not a good idea to spend so much time in London.
Europe is hugely culturally diverse, and its history is the history of Western thought and culture. In London you will get a tiny glimpse of a tiny part of it that is already the most familiar to you. In fact, stay in London and you will even miss most of the contribution of the UK to that culture - hell, even Shakespeare was from the Midlands and not London.
Get a European rail pass and get out there! |

"wont be that different from the United States" !
Yeah right!
London is not over rated as one person has said. London is a fantastic city and I have lived all over the UK. London is an amazing place. |

The UK is NOT like the USA. It's quite rude to assume it is.
If you want to experience different cultures, I suggest you visit London. It's the most multi-cultural city in the world.
You could visit other parts of the UK, don't just stick to London. Every place is different and unique.
As for the language, please don't make the naive mistake of assuming UK english and the US version are the same. You will have trouble interpreting speech and accents here, we don't all talk like the Queen you know. |

I would avoid london! Expensive and over rated..
I would try Scotland (glasgow, edinburgh).. much more prettier and cheaper also Ireland (dublin) and wales (cardiff)... |
