I am an irishwoman currently living in britain for uni. the british dont dislike the accent but associate it with being rude or loud. the reason for this is simply because it is a different culture. the british are up their **** with being either really polite or really rowdy, and americans tend to be from a culture where they are straight talking.
as long as you are polite and not demanding, you should be fine.
i know this may sound insulting, it is not the opinion i hold (the irish and americans get on well), but unfortunately, you do get some people who are just ignorant. this opinion is held only by a very slight minority, so dont let it put you off.
as for talking in a british accent, dont bother. just be yourself and be proud of who you are and where you come from!!!
as for it brits thinking it is sexy...im not sure. no more than any other accents. its not one that people really comment on.
i hope you make it to britain, it is a nice place, and like i said, it is only a few people who hold this silly view ;) |

Speak how you normally do. You won't pull off a British accent to people who are actually British you'll just sound daft. I don't like american accents on the whole but who cares? It's better than having a transatlantic mixed up accent that everyone either side of the pond will laugh at. |

BE YOURSELF ...brits do not worry about accents, we have all sorts of accents in the UK. |

I don't think we do. I'm probably biased, though, my wife is Texan and I love the way she speaks.
I think what does grate on our nerves, though, is American people behaving ignorantly when visiting other countries and talking very loudly, as if everything they have to say is incredibly interesting. I realise this isn't always the case. but thats the stereotype. |

I went to England during the summer with my American accent and I did fine with the locals. I even tried out a fake British accent just for laughs and they knew I was a Yank. They knew before I even opened my mouth. |

i am from the uk and although i do not find the accents sexy as such i quite like various american accents.
i got married in las vegas (explains my avatar) and spent my honeymoon in new york and i found that i couldnt get anybody to understand me in bars if i asked for a water lol everyone that heard me speak just kept saying 'hey like harry potter'.
just be yourself everyone will love you so long as you are not arrogant.
edit - haha i have jus read that you have learnt your english accent from a mancunian - i am from manchester and do not personally speak with a strong manc accent but seriously if you try speaking with a manchester accent everyone will think you are really rough - particuarly if you are down south. enjoy your trip. |

Yes! Speak like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. People will love you.
Seriously, heed the advice above. Some people have issues with US foreign policy but not Americans per se. Just be yourself. Have fun, be fun. |

Just be yourself, the Brits don't hate accents ...just people who are too full of themselves!!! |

I heard they think the way we speak is sexy, just as we admire their accents. |

Who told you that, they must have a grudge against the Brits......idiots. I havnt met anyone yet that doesnt like an American accent. We love Americans and cant wait to find all about them when we meet them. I would suggest you make your accent more obvious, that way you will make friends a lot quicker. |

I'm British and I LOVE American accents! I can listen to Americans all day! :) xxx |

I don't think that's true. Personally I like the generic American accent for whatever that's worth. I especially like east coast accents, but don't particularly care for Southern drawls.
Please don't be the American doing "the British accent". Most Yanks have completely the wrong idea about how we speak and it shows in your movies and sitcoms (like the Friends episodes in London for example). |

If we hated the American accent, we wouldn't try to sing with one, or to speak with one.
Hope you enjoy England! |

I don't believe it!
|
No, I've never heard that. You'll be okay. |

I don't know where you heard that, but its not true. And seriously, please don't try speaking in an English accent! I imagine it'll be amusing, but some may think you are taking the mick - you americans can't do it! Just as we can't seem to mimic yours too well either! |
|

That is rubbish, and believe me, it would be a lot worse to listen to a dodgy impression. |

WELL PERSONALLY I LOVEEEEEEEEEE THE AMERICAN ACCENT, VERY WARM AND INVITING BUT MAINLY I LIKE THE SOUTH ONE LIKE TEXAN AND GEORGIAN. I WOULD DIE FOR A SOUTHERN ACCENT. TO BE HONEST I FIND THE BRITISH ACCENT SO BORING EXCEPT FOR THE MANCHESTER ONE, I LOVE THERE WAY WITH WORDS. BUT IF I WAS TO BE OUT THERE ONE DAY AND HERE AN AMERICAN ACCENT ID GO WEAK AT THE KNEES. DONT PUT ON A BRITISH ACCENT!!!!!! WE HEAR IT DAY IN DAY OUT AND IT REALLY DOES GET OLD, SO ANYTHING DIFFERENT IS ******** AMAZING |
