The south of England seems to get worse winters than the north of Scotland now,why is that?

Is it beacause it's closer to mainland Europe?

Already this winter, northern Scotland has experienced each of the following:

I notice you say "seems" to get worse winters.
Perhaps it seems that way because as soon as the temperature drops or a few flakes of snow fall on the south the press go into overdrive with their inane reporting.
It's been freezing up here for weeks now, but no mention of that on the news.

Col
It doesnt . Mean average temp in the North of Scotland is 6C and in the deep South 11C . In December the Met office tells us that Westleton (Suffolk) recorded a maximum temperature of 14.7 °C on the 20th whilst Aviemore (Highland) recorded a minimum temperature of -12.9 °C on the 29th !!!

Perhaps one has to look at media coverage . Those of us in the Land of the Glens expect frost and snow in winter months . It appears that when you move into the South of England a dusting of the white stuff brings wall to wall news coverage !

Bell
It's colder in the north of Scotland.

Padfoot
don't forget us in the north of England, were -6 at the min

Im in London. At the moment the sun is out, but its still cold.

puppy padfoot says the north is -6 C at the moment. I think its warmer than that down here in London.

It's about high pressure lingering over southern Britain drawing cold air from eastern europe. In summer this gives southern Britain a good summer. Northern Britain gets arctic air at this time of year when low pressure is in control of air flow.

This situation was common the 1970's so hopefully we should be in for a cracking summer, even here in East Scotland.

is the sun shining in the north of scotland? it is here in southern england. its reasonably warm too and my husband who works outside is happily working. i havent had a moan call from him all day. i cant remember when i last saw snow. although we had a few snowflakes last winter which lasted 15 minutes. no i think our winters are not worst than scotlands.

Gillygems
People make more fuss about the weather in southern England. In Scotland and Wales we just get on with life and don't panic.
