Depends how much money you've got to spend on a place.
I'd recommend central Manchester, it's so lively and exiting, a high apartment would keep you away from any noise and night time, and you'd be right in the heart of the city where all the jobs and leisure are. |

Ignore the comment re moss side and also the one saying that manchester is a dump. In my opinion its probably the best city in the UK. The city centre has really rejuvenated over the past 5 years, there is a whole new business district in Spinningfields with loads of new restaurants, the Arndale centre has had a new makeover and there is a great nightlife.
Salford Quays has had a lot of money spent on it lately and its a good area with great links to the city centre on the tram - there are loads of new apartments here and they look v cool. Didsbury is a more leafy area with plenty of young professionals living there, its got its own nightlife with loads of bars and pubs and here you can live in either flats or houses. |

There are many nice parts of Manchester and its surrounding areas, there are the bad parts as well .This is what one would expect from a major city anywhere in the UK.
The South Eastern area of the conurbation is very handy for transport and leisure, Stockport has some excellent areas but can be very expensive ,Cheadle ,Bramhall,Gatley ,Woodford and Hazel grove has some of the finest houses in the whole of the greater Manchester area.Well serviced by Road,Rail and a local airport ,it is a superb base from which to start from.Within 20 minutes of the Stockport borders you can be in Derbyshires peak district ,a haven for the outdoor types.Yorkshires dales are a short drive away. All the major destinations of the UK are reachable with ease from this part of the country.
Hope this helps. |

Didsbury, Marple, Worsley, Hale Barns and Hazel Grove are the only ones I would recommend. The others I wouldnt recommend at all!!! |

As long as you avoid the immediate south part of the city centre you will be fine.
Obviously you will pay more rent/mortgage to live in the city centre.
Try the outskirts of the city. Public transport into town is as good as any other in the country. |

Didsbury, Chorlton, The 4 Heatons, Withington.
There are nice parts of Manchester, you just have to look for them. I'm from Didsbury and it's very leafy. Saying that, I did move to one of the roughest parts of Birmingham for Uni... |

If you are still at the thinking stage of moving to Manchester, then keep it like that.
Manchester is a dump.
I used to live there and it is such an ugly city. Dirty, violent, the buildings are all falling down and the new ones that have been put up have no consideration for their neighbours. It's a mess.
I was there for Christmas and couldn't wait to leave.
My advice, think again. The UK has some fantastic cities, unfortunately, Manchester isn't one of them. |
