Depends on how independent you are. If you are comfortable with going by yourself, go by train. Buses/coaches do have good tours but they tend to go to more touristy areas. Trains on the other hand go to more rural areas as well, so you'll get to see your landscapes. But if you want to see pretty landscapes, might I suggest Wales too? I've been there several times and I'm going there again this summer. It's just so relaxing and if your life is a bit hectic (like mine, a New Yorker!), it's a nice little retreat. Snowdonia National Park is absolutely beautiful and there is a smallish village called Betws-y-Coed which has some of the "quaint old village" feel near the Mountains. It's perfect for the outdoorsy types because you can go hiking and camping as well, or there are some "less involved" walking trails. Also, there are some great castles in North Wales, like Conwy (small fishing village, castle, village surrounded by castle walls, Plas Mawr- a home owned by the Tudor family, pretty scenery all around). Plus, if you feel like venturing into Ireland, there are ferries that only take about 2 hours to get into Dubin. |

The best way if you do not have a car is to go on coach tours,
normally the drivers are well clued up and will tell you about places you are going through. if you get a good company that is. GOOD LUCK |

By coach or train, both will give you plenty of time to look! The scenery is right there, you just have to travel through it. I'd suggest going to Edinburgh and Cardiff too. For such a small island there are lots of different landscapes - mountains of Wales and Scotland, wetlands of Somerset and Norfolk, the Cotswolds, the pretty lanes of Devon and Cornwall, Salisbury Plain (and Stonehenge), the Pennines, great beaches all the way round the coasts (especially the Gower Peninsula in Wales), the New Forest and the Forest of Dean, Dartmoor, Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District. |

I just rented a car in London and drove in a big loop around England. First to Canterbury then Dover, Brighton, Winchester, Exeter, Tintagel, Clovelly, Bath, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick, York, Cambridge, and back to London. One day in most of the towns is plenty, maybe two days in York and Bath. |
