Questioner

Touristic city near Liverpool?

I am going to stay three days in Liverpool. I would like to use the third day to know a touristic place near Liverpool (1 hour train). What you would you recommend, Manchester, Blackpool or some place else? I am not driving, I am relying on coaches, trains, buses, etc.

Thank you!

i'm with the chester lot .

I think Chester is a very interesting place. It' an old Roman settlement, with lot of timber framed tudor buildings. If your not interested in the history there's some good shopping.
It takes about 36min by car, I don't know about public transport.

carina
I'd agree Chester is lovely, very interesting
Blackpool is very touristy ... it's funfairs, Blackpool Tower, beer and fish & chips ... depends what you like
if you love shopping then the Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet is a retail therapy extravaganza, lots of discount outlets, see

if you're into zoos then Chester Zoo is one of the premier ones, see

why would you go anywhere else when there's so much to do in Liverpool ? :)

but yes, Chester is well worth a day out. - Wirral Line trains from any of the underground stations.
Another good day out would be Southport - Northern Line trains from Central or Moorfields Station - You could even break your journey at Hall Road station and go see the Gormley Statues (Another Place) on Crosby Beach.
Manchester is also about an hour away - but to be honest there isn't anything there that Liverpool hasn't got already (with the possible exception of a Harvey Nichols)

I agree Chester is a must for tourists with its roman ruins, medieval city centre with the unique shopping arcades, and its still intact city walls.
You can get a train to Chester from James St station, with 1 change on the Wirral I think, just over 1/2 hour.

I wouldn't recommend Blandchester (Manchester) there really is nothing interesting there.

Chester, absolutely. I am from Liverpool and Chester is awash with history.

Other than that, Southport, certainly better than Blackpool.

Nothing new here I'm with the Chester Brigade

I'd say either Chester or Southport. My wife is from Liverpool and we often visit Southport on our weekend visits to her home city (we live in London), the drive to Southport is easy, and there is plenty to do there to keep you occupied for the day. As for Chester, there is much to do there also, but may need longer than one day to do it justice, If you do choose Chester, then on the way their or back, drop in on Cheshire Oaks, a very nice shopping centre with cinema, bowling & restaurants.

Chester. Go to Chester. It's cool :) Southport is good, but there's not much to do in Blackpool apart from Pleasure Beach Themepark. How about... um... there's Crosby Beach in Liverpool... wouldn't you rather go to the Liverpool in New York? But since you're staying here, I'd say Chester's the best place to go near Liverpool. Don't forget, North Wales is only an hour away.

Another vote for Chester - it's a great place to visit and easily accessible from Liverpool.
