Trick to passing the driving test? |
i have a valid US driving license and moved to the UK last year. I think the Driving test is absolutly ridiculous. I have been Driving for over 7 years, but I have flunked my UK driving test twice. I have another one on Monday.. Any tips on how to pass these |

As previous answers have said, make sure the test examiner knows you are checking your mirrors and being very observant.
Ensure your hands are positioned at the '10 & 2' position on the steering wheel and never, ever cross your hands when steering.
Calmness and observation is key to passing. Again, as previous answers have said, if you make a mistake, acknowledge it and see if you're asked to do it again.
Appropriate speed is very important. Not exceeding the speed limit, but not crawling and holding up other traffic. Over-hesitancy at roundabouts is also a common way of failing.
By the way, have you had driving lessons with a UK driving school? I was taught to drive by my dad, but I purchased 6 driving lessons to ensure that I knew about current test standards.
Driving in the UK is nothing like US driving. Driving in the UK is much more challenging and the driving test has to reflect this. There are 65 million people squashed onto the British Isles, and most of them seem to be driving at the same time.
As you know, the answerer who mentioned that you shouldn't have to do the UK driving test is completely wrong. There is no equivalency between UK and US driving licenses.
Good luck! |

Check out http://www.2pass.co.uk - got stackloads of stuff to help you there.
I think the UK driving test is bloody stupid too.... when I first got my provisional license in '96, you could just do the practical test and the theory test was an optional trial thing............. since then it's been made more & more difficult to the point where i'm thinking next they'll probably have the examiner ask you to give the car a complete strip down & rebuild to prove you know how it all works and how to maintain it.
And it costs over £60 now for both tests... for the benefit of non-Brits reading this, thats: $114 US / 89Euro / $126 (Canadian) or 13,385 Japanese YEN
Still, that's what you get with bloody Labour in charge of things. |

If you make a mistake tell the examiner what you did wrong and ask to do it again. I hit the kerb whilst parallel parking did this and he made me reverse around a corner which i did well and he passed me. |

talk to your examiner and watch the road and what is going on around your carefully Good luck |

To pass your license test in the UK is much more difficult than in America. In the UK if you forget to turn your wheels to whatever side of the road when doing overnight parking they will flunk you, while in America they usually let something like that slide.
All I know is to just practice practice practice! And just try to remember the small little details. Good luck! |

The driving test in the UK is horrendous. It is just so difficult. I'd ask your instructor to go over a mock test with you so you are in a better frame of mind. Also, be confident and don't hang back.
But I'd also check if there is some way that you can surpass the test. Surely if you already hold a valid licence in the US then you are entitled to drive in the UK without re-doing a test. I'd find out more if I were you. |
