Trip to UK?

last summer, my family went to UK for vacation. we stayed in our uncle's house for couple weeks. well, everything gone fine, exccept for something that i don't really like about british. ok, my brother and i chat w/ my consins(british), and they look at me in a really weird way when i say " what up dude?" and " what are u guys gonna do this weekend?" i mean, don't they know english?
the other thing that piss me off is when i tell the cashier in the fast food shop that my meal is going to "to go", that guy look at me, then i say i'm not eating in there, i think he knows what am i talking about then.
Don't british know any american eng.

British people can be fairly Xenophobic and one of the many people that they dislike are Americans. Chances are the people you spoke to knew exactly what you were talking about, they were just being awkward.

Don't forget though, if you're in England (and this is, of course, where the language originalted) you should maybe make an effort to learn local phrases and use them instead. English people say "Eat in or take out/away" instead of "to go". Don't know why anyone would have a problem with you asking about the weekend though, you didn't say anything unfamiliar there!

Funnily enough, the English invented the English language. I suggest, if anyone is getting it wrong, its you 'Dude'.

American English is full of phrases that pertain to Americans. even in the UK if you go to another part of the country you will hear unfamiliar phrases and things which don't seem to make sense and lead to misunderstandings etc.
for example when in USA if we ask for 'chips' we mean we want American 'fries'. over here if you ask for chips (meaning you want crisps) you will be offered a plate of fies. the list goes on. mainly if you are having problems with local phrases it simply means you are just young and inexperienced. do take time to learn different phrases wherever you go, it helps to make life easier and makes Friends and is a courtesy at the same time.

Why should we talk in American English when we live in the UK. You should talk proper English instead while you are here - after all, English was invented here.

five toed sloth
When in Rome dude, when in Rome...innit.

Paul
People in Great Britain know English, not American English.

I should be doing something else
All I can say is that the cashier in the fast food restaurant was being awkward. I would certainly know what 'to go' means, and I have heard people here saying that, as well as 'to take away' or 'to take out'
But you should remember that if you are in the UK, you should at least make an effort not to use phrases that we don't understand, after all, this is where the English language originated, so you shouldnt expect us to start using the hijacked version that is referred to as 'American English'

Well if you don't like the British don't bother F*CKING coming then. You ignorant American (Wanker).
By the way we invented the English langauge. That language you speak isn't English it's a whole loadof SH*T. So my advice is shut it before someone kickes you head in.

I am St☮ned ;)
i think you need to learn english pal
or even american english
don't fcuk with the english

Cafell
Despite the proliferation of american english on UK TV, I'm constantly supprised how many people in the UK don't know what it means. Even when they try and copy it!

Ordering a takeaway "to go", yes that would confuse quite a few people in the UK, it's just not something they'd hear.

Other things are the phrase "411" which american kids use to mean information (due to the number 411 being directory assistance). This means nothing to people in the UK and they have no point of reference unless they've been to the USA.

sidewinder
Hey don't you know that the UK is the 52nd American State? Thanks to TV most of us are totally assimilated to your culture.

Truth
From the British point of view they are trying to protect something they invented that we stoled and corrupted.
