NO you do NOT need a passport to go to Eire from the UK. It is a similar system to the Schengen system in mainland europe, where once you are in a Schengen member country you can move freely to the others, i.e, once in France, you can drive into Germany etc without a passport. The UK and Ireland do take part in some aspects of Schengen, but not free movement without passport. Instead, we have our own agreement called the Common Travel Area, meaning you can travel between all the islands of Britain, including Eire, without a passport. You will however, need photographic ID to board the plane.
You need a passport to move BETWEEN (but not within) these areas: the Common Travel Area (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Eire, Isle of Man and Channel Islands), the Schengen area (Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Austria, Greece, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden), and then of course, all the other countries of the world. |
