Want to move from the U.S. to the U.K...need guidance? |
Hello everyone, I'm a 19 year old college student and musician, and I work in retail....so you can imagine i'm not the richest bloke. But I wish to move to the U.K. I plan on applying for a student visa, the problem is I don't know which area would be most suitable for me. And I would also like to know what an acceptable price range for an apartment (or flat?) would be for someone with my qualifications. HELP PLEASE! |

All the information regarding student visas and the process is available on the website below:

As far as which area is most suitable, I would recommend firstly decided which college or university would suit your intended course of study and one which you could afford first.
House, flats and apartment prices vary depending on where in the country you choose to stay. The general rule is the further north you stay the cheaper the cost of living becomes. Just do some general searches online to get an idea, but bare in mind these places do not include the cost of utilites and also it would be worth doing some research on possible student accommodation available in certain places as this could be a cheaper option.

Not the best places but it gives you an idea of how much it would cost and you can search by location. |

firstly what do you plan to study? if you want a student visa you will have to be going to a university, which you will have to have sorted out before you can get a visa.
Prices of flats vary hugely depending on where you live, come back when you have more information |

go on apartments.com and search the uk. And then see if that area has a college near it. |

southern england has a pretty fair climate usually students often share a large privately rented house, in hampshire the going rate seems to be about £400-£600 monthly for a one bed flat, if u pick a seaside town there is usually lots of work around on or off season. Portsmouth has a large student population has good ferry links to france and spain and also has lots of cafes clubs and venues that do music also Brighton is another place that is quite popular look up both places on your Web. |

Not a good idea right now unless you're a good swimmer. |

Please bare in mind that you will probably only get paid around £6/hour for Retail work, even in London. Try Leeds, it's a really cool place, and decent value too.
The UK is very expensive, especially real estate, but when the sun shines it's a great place to be! Live young, and be daring! You will have a great time............ |

Gonna be honest here mate, I'm from Manchester. Manchester is a pretty good place to start. Flat prices are cheaper in the north of England than the south. Manchester has good culture and is curently undergoing massive regeneration. Also when you live in Manchester you have a God given right to consider yourself cooler than anyone else, ever (but thats because, well, it's true).
If not Manchester then try Newcastle. I lived there for a few months and I found it to be interesting and the people there are very friendly. Again it's in the north so cheaper flat prices.
London is the obvious choice, and it's okay but for me it's too crowded and everything is pretty expensive.
In the end just follow your heart, and all that bollocks. |

wait till the dollar does up before you move over as you will have a nasty shock. Rent for a room in a house can be about $600 a month. Our food is expensive, our pubs are expensive but on the upside our minimum wage is about 12 dollars an hour! |

Don't do it.
Or at least VISIT first.
Unless you're kinda wealthy - you're going to have a crappy lifestyle compared to over there |

Why do you want to live here? Come to visit by all means but the UK is a very expensive country and has a major crime problem. The touristy bits of London are nice but it is more dangerous that New York with out of control gun and street crime.
We are flooded with immigrants from the EU who come here because our government is soft on crime and quick to hand out houses and money to any foreigner who asks - this is why the country is heavily taxed eg our "sales tax" is 17.5%.
Come to visit but reconsider living here. |
