There are a lot of nice areas in West London. Check out Wimbeldon, Chiswick, Turnham Green, Northfields, South Ealing, Richmond and Kew. These parts of London have a lot of open spaces and trees. The transportation links are good too. Prices are rather high though...

Ruislip. Right on the edge of ancient woods and a lido with lots of open space nearby, lots of history to Ruislip. In the Doomsday Book it says 'The goodliest people are in Ruislip' or something like that! (Not sure that's totally true!)

Ruislip is 15 miles from the West End and has tube stations.

Lots of pubs and restaurants in the centre.

I live in Hampstead. Its just fab!!!! Close to the city, tube @ Belsize Park overland as well. Close to the city. £6 in a cab. Got the Heath all, 971 acres to run amock on with kites or kids or pets. And if you keep an eye out, you just might see a celeb or two.....(one asleep at the wheel).

one word...ISLINGTON

apart from Camden and Hackney, it's the only other borough that encompasses both central and inner london (and westminster)

Perhaps Tony and Cherie might move back here next year

Depends on your tastes. London's got somewhere for everyone, you just need to find the place that's right for you.

For me - Bethnal Green has everything I want within a reasonable walking distance.

The real problem is finding the balance between what you want and what you can afford.

Although I'd strongly recommend NOT living near Custom House. DHL - the courier company - have offices in Baghdad, but won't deliver to Custom House, because it's not safe.

I think Kensington and Chelsea are the best areas in London. Docklands is on it's way if it's yuppie apartments you like. If it's sprawling mansions then Richmond is your best bet. If you're on a budget then Clapham and Islington are great. If you are on a stricter still budget than just avoid Hackney and Camberwell and you should be ok.
