You're coming from London I'll tell you now it's like another world!

Firstly Sheffield is an amazing city, far far better than anything Leeds or Manchester has to offer. The history Sheffield has ranges from the doomsday book and obviously played a major part in both world wars, the latter being a major reason behind many of our old building no longer standing, as such a lot of the older parts of the city are still a little dilapidated but we have a good council that are doing a huge project called the heart of the city which will transform Sheffield as we know it, and the results can be seen immediately with the erection of new well designed buildings.

We make over half the worlds scalpels and are obviously famous for steel manufacturing along with many other things.

If you ask anyone who has lived in the city for a short time to describe it the chances are they'd say "it's like a big village", and that's because it is. You're never more than half an hours bus or car ride from some of the most amazing countryside Britain has to offer, Derbyshire and the largest National Park in the country, One third of which is part of Sheffield.

We were at the forefront of football as we know it today having the oldest football team on record with Sheffield FC which split into Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, OK they aren't premier league any more but if you get the chance to go to one of the Sheffield derby's you'll understand how exciting football can be.

We have Meadowhall which is a huge shopping mall, it was the largest at one time in Europe but now is relegated to the 3rd largest in the UK, this doesn't distract from the centre as the council will not allow any expansion of it. It's worth a visit when raining also being one of the busiest in the UK it can get crammed.

There are loads of different things to see and do that I really can't list them all.

Music is a major part of Sheffields most recent past having taken over the 80's with electro pop with bands like Human League, ABC and the like following with Def Lepard, Artic Monkeys, PULP, Richard Hawley, Moloko and the pubs we have have regular live night with new and upcoming bands, music wise Sheffield is the place to be, also art wise aswell. We have an amazing pop artist that's doing well here and across the pond called Pete McKee who recently did animation for The Simpsons!

Anyways enough rambling. The fact is you're coming to Uni. Both Sheffield Uni and Hallam are excellent uni's to come to. Sheffield Uni is one of the largest in the UK and has the most amount or students at anyone time. They recently did a pole that concluded Sheffield had the most amount of graduates staying in Sheffield than any other city.

The nightlife here is also something for other cities to be green at, we have some of the most famous night clubs in the country, Leadmill, Boardwalk, Roxy and they're all really good nights out, if culture is more your thing then again we have two of the best and world famous theatres, The Crucible and Lyceum that's seen some of the worlds biggest stars perform on stage.

So my recomendation is come to Sheffield, enjoy it all and I bet you something you won't leave!

I have a number of friends that are actually from down south that came here for Uni reasons and they graduated a while ago and I asked if they were going to leave and all of them said no, because while their home is always going to be home, they class Sheffield as home too!

The fact is you come and you get sucked into this city without even noticing, it affects you in some way. We're not perfect, we have crimes, we have ugly people and places, but we are who we are... friendly, down to earth folk who come together when needed and coming from London you'll notice the friendlyness straight away!

Anyway some nice link below for some of the stuff I mentioned, and enjoy and hopefully we'll see you soon.

Sheffields great. Im from Sheffield and went to Sheffield Hallam University (law degree, completed in January)

its great. The nightlife is great, both in town and eccelsal. The people are friendly. Lots of shopping places and the living expenses arent bad either.

I didnt want to leave to study anywhere else

Sheffield is a great place to study and live. Alot of people say its a ruff place but believe me the university is a great place to study, the people are all really down to earth and the accommodation is fantastic. The nightlife is brilliant every night of the week and theres plenty of Lovely areas to explore, not forgetting the huge shopping centre close by. I'd really look into it :-)

hey i go to the university of sheffield and obviously stay there during term! what are you thinking of doing?
as a city its pretty great - although i live in the endcliffe site and its really really far away from the centre so i would go for the city centre accomodation.
I dont know entirely what you're into - it has great shopping, all the big high street names, its been remade a lot recently, a lot of money pumped into it so it has some really pretty areas. the student union is really really good and the university is very pretty - traditional redbrick with ivy and stuff. there is also a paternoster in the arts tower which is funky and retro! :) sheffield itself is really pretty, and the centre of the city has big wide streets which are clean and well kept. its not "run down" at all.the people are very friendly and all the locals you meet want to chat and help you.
lots to do - dry ski slopes, cinemas, big shopping centre (meadowhall) trams(!) ice hockey, stadium etc etc...
Hope this helps!

I MOVED FROM LONDON TO SHEFFIELD AND A WEST HAM FAN YES THERES TWO , but this one would say sheffield is a good place to live , work or study , people are real people here pubs and clubs are good , would recommend over and above london lived and worked there all my life decided at 40 + to move no regrets , good luck

Personally I wouldnt choose Sheffield. Theres much better places.
The only decent thing about Sheffield is the shopping centre (meadow hall).

Go and visit first................ see for yourself.
Perhaps spend a weekend there so you see it properly.

i d prefer leeds

It's a hilly, northern town.

If you like climbing it's a good place to be, otherwise I can't honestly say it has much to recommend it.
