What's going on in England?

Hello Englishmen...and women.
I'm from the U.S., and lately have met a growing number of people from England that are moving here. Where I live (Wisconsin) was always a somewhat unlikely place for people of England to move to, because of our location in the northern midwest....English people tend to take up residence on the east coast or Florida. We do have a lot of German and Polish people though.

So my question, how is Englands economy currently, and is there any particular reason why we might be seeing a growing number of English people here? Our economy as you may know is not so hot right now, but the majority of people are still doing alright. I know Englands economy is on a downslope too, but is it very bad? Bad enough for people to want to leave the country?

Anyone I've ever met from England seems to have a low opinion of their country, and is always saying how bad the weather is, or the taxes, and so on. Why such the low opinion of your own country? What's so bad about it?

I've been to England before, and I liked it (minus all the rain!), but I know things are different when you actually live somewhere as apposed to just visiting.

You can answer as honestly as you want, I'm just curious about it.
Thanks for your answers!

Yes, some of the things you have listed sound just like here....mostly the immigration problems, cost of living rising, etc...In Miami (FL) if you don't speak spanish, you almost can't communicate with anyone, it's rediculous, and the same problems with Mexican immigrants taking SO many jobs because they are willing to work for MUCH less, then they send half the money back to their families in Mexico, while they live in hotels and turn once great neighborhoods in to filthy ghettos with the virgin mary painted on anything they can find! grrrrrr.

Taxes have rocketed, living conditions are getting poorer and its like living in a different country anyway. Soon there will be more foreigners in England than English people.

Lots of people don't even speak English, the jobs are being taken up by imigrants prepared to work for lower wages.. The prime minister is an idiot and the credit crunch isn't helping.

We havn't had a summer this year, well ofcourse we have only its been worse than winter..hmm.

Does that answer you're question?

Despite what you read in the press, England & the UK in general is a perfectly good place to live. However you do need to be able to cope with the extortionate cost of living, poor weather, high crime & anti-social behaviour rate and the general lack of basic respect.

As a tourist destination the UK is still great, but a little bit limited as some towns and cities are not geared up for tourism.

The flood of people leaving is due to many factors, but seeking a better quality of life is the main driving force.

There is nothing wrong with England, these Brits have obviously never had to live in a third world country, they are ungrateful.

Honestly people here have just had enough of everything us english Are not just going to you part of the world we are headed anywhere that we think we will be better paid and have a better quality of life think most of us would if we could x

We are running out of room, and jobs with people from the EU being able to live and work here with very few limitations from our Goverment - who are currently having a rethink as to work job skills people should have before they are aloud to work here. too little to late.

It's over-crowded and the indigenous population are disadvantaged.

Yeah things like the taxes and stuff are ridiculous! Prices of petrol and diesel (or gas) keep going up and in London they have congestion charge when you enter central london in your car so you have to pay 8 pounds so about $16! I'm sure you know where I'm going with this so I'm gonna stop ranting now! There's always stories in the news aswell about people being fined for putting their trash out one day early and stuff like that, the government try to make money any way they can! I'm hoping to leave this country soon anyhoo!
Ahhhh I feel better now lol! Oh yeah and the crime rate is shocking.
