A few thoughts:

Honister slate mine (Honister pass) - tours of the mine workings several times per day (mind your head!)

Keswick pencil factory (graphite mining here goes back a long way)

Ruskin museum in Coniston (info not only on Ruskin but also Donald Campbell and Arthur Ransome)

Sellafield visitor centre (near Seascale), lots of info and interactive displays regarding nuclear power, might it be making a come-back?

... or just put on your overtrousers and keep walking!

If you're there with your mates, go to the pub after a nice long walk. If you're with your girlfriend go for a good meal then cuddle up by a cosy fire, there's bound to be a pub with one in the lakes.

Have to agree with twang. Walking in the rain is great. If you got the right kit it should not really bother you. I use to feel really good after a walk in the rain

There is absolutley nothing to do apart from get wet or sit in a pub. There is nothing for kids when its dry apart from a walk
