I would be looking for £XXX as an annual salary before any overtime plus XXX days holidays reviewed after the first year

Tell them the truth. You know how much you need to live. You know how much it will cost to get to work. You also know your current salary and remuneration package. Tell the interviewer a rough idea of how much you would like to be paid and give the impression that you are willing to negotiate (assuming you are willing to negotiate). Ensure you can justify what you are asking for.

Research on the internet what similar positions earn and then ask for that. If you ask too high they'll not employ you and if you ask too low, you'll be selling yourself short. Ask people who already do the job what they earn.

Assuming that you did your homework and found out the pay for your job, ask for a range of pay.

Be frothright and honest about what kind of salary you expect. Of course, you should always express that it is negotiable.

You should break down to them the package you are currently on - basic pay, car or car allowance, bonuses, holiday, pension and healthcare etc and any other bits (hopefully they'd have this anyway)...and then speak about what you would like from your next role. Speak in terms of a range or a general package - e.g. if you were on £20k + £5k car allowance, which is a £30k package, say you're looking to consider things in the £32k range, and then they can make that up into a package in the best way.

If you're going to be travelling more or less, factor this into your calculations, it's part of your interview preparation. Make sure you've done research on what the market is paying for your kind of role - don't whinge about why you need the money, but tell them that you've done your research, you know what the market will pay and you know that your skills base attracts a certain level of remuneration.

Don't be too quick to bring up the money thing yourself in interview but be prepared to answer if they bring it up. If in any doubt and don't want to say the wrong thing, outline your salary as it is, and ask to go away and contemplate the package with regard to your travelling time and expenses, hours etc and get back to them within a specified time frame - this should be fine with them.

I hope that makes sense, good luck!

you should do some homework and try and find out the average payment for that kind of job before hand

Blade
First u need to know how much is the average salary for the position, and u need to know how much u know e/or have experience about the position offered, so u will know how much u can ask for.

As much as possible! Seriously, first you should have lied about your original salary to guarentee a pay rise, but keep it realistic. Next, consider travell expenses, any other costs, hours, and finally any salary they have advertised, then pitch a bit. SO, for example, if you are currently on 20K tell the interviewer you're currently on 21K, will need to buy a car to travel further, (they advertised 21-25K depending on experience) so will need at least 23k. Good luck.

If they are referring to pay i have been told to offer a range that would be acceptable to you, not a specific number.
