I think the Tower is the most impressive ensemble of buildings. Plus you get to see the Crown Jewels. But it's very difficult to select a single thing.

For a stunning view of London you can't beat the top of Primrose Hill, and it's free.
PS If you are in the Swiss Cottage area, avoid its eponymous pub on the one way system. The beer is crap!

That really depends on what kind of things you like.

Clubs, bars, restaurants, museums, theatre, live music, sport, art, history.......... I reckon if you put some more info in the question you might be able to get a much more informative answer - London is huge and theres loads going on, i'm sure you can find the best of whatever you like here.

I would pick the British Museum if I had time for only 1 place to visit. It is an incredible collection of antiquities. It is not just another museum. I got to see the actual objects that were mere pictures in my history books.

jb
Its all about the Eye, and great views, from there you can see most things, then go to Trafalgar square and ride a lion.

Depends what you are into. For me it would be Tower Bridge

The Shopping is amazing :) Just wonder down Oxford Street... Also Harods is amazing, pretend your rich hehe!

Try to act like you're not a tourist, you will enjoy it more. I rec. you stay in Swiss Cottage (primrose hill is here as someone mentioned before) and get the tube to get the real english expience. There is great dining nearby. The hotel i like is the Mariott, regents park

Make sure you go to the West End, I rec. we will rock you. Its amazing! Or Blue Man Group or the Producers!

Covent Garden is so fun, but its very busy so make sure you don't go with little children. As is Leister square, but its cool to see a movie in a theatre that shows premieres!

Possibly skip Tower of London, that stuff. Its a bit typical... Just let London tell you where to go and just explore!

Right now? The Christmas lights at Oxford St are a sight to behold. Piccadily circus & Soho is also amazing not to see but to feel its late night vibes... Enjoy London :)

The best place to see in London is London. If you visit, you need to see it from the London Eye
