"England" is sometimes, wrongly, used in reference to the whole United Kingdom, the entire island of Great Britain (or simply Britain), or indeed the British Isles. This is not only incorrect but can cause offence to people from other parts of the UK.
( Nationality of the British people).
The diverse history of England, Scotland and Wales has led to very different cultural traditions; The Scots and Welsh have right to feel aggrieved whenever the term 'English' is used wrongly, to mean all three.
The name United Kingdom refers to the union of what were once four separate countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland ( though most of Ireland is now independent.)
The UK's full name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Great Britain comprises only of England, Scotland and Wales.
Great Britain is the largest island of the British Isles.
England, Great Britain, the United Kingdom
and the British Isles do not mean the same thing!

I understand your confusion. American commentators and News Broadcasters often refer to England, when in fact they should say Britain or the UK.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the full title.
This is abbreviated to Britain, the UK or Great Britain.
Great Britain is the main island and consists of England Scotland and Wales. Ireland is the smaller island but only the northern part is part of the UK.
Tony Blair for example is the Prime Minister of the UK, not just England.
Calling him the Prime Minister of England is like calling President Bush the President of Texas.
I hope that makes sense. |

The United Kingdom is comprised of the Monarchy of England and Scotland, the Principality of Wales and the Islands of the North (i.e. the Orkneys, Shetlands and Hebridies). Northern Ireland is a seperate issue, hence why on legal documents you see 'United Kingdom and Northern Ireland'.
Britian is made up of all the islands situated in the area, so this includes the UK, the Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man and the Baliwicks of The Channel Islands.
Hope this Helps further. |

Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland can be counted as 4 seperate countries. There is a clear distinction between them
The UK refers to "The United Kingdom Alliance af Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales" as ruled by the Royal household and the Monarch (Currently HRH Queen Elizabeth 2).
Great Britian refers to the land mass of Scotland, England and Wales. |

The official name of the country known as GB or UK is
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Nothern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Gurnsey, Jersey and their dominions.
The confusion is caused because the geographical name of the British Isles also includes the Republic of Ireland (Eire)
The larger of the two islands is sometimes known as Great Britain,(England Scotland and Wales but not including any of the islands around the cost such as Isle of Man Gurnsey Jersey Orkney or Shetland). I have never known the smaller island be called Less (or Lesser) Britain, it is called Ireland.
It is quite confusing |

England, Wales, and N.Ireland are the United Kingdom (political name). Scotland & Ireland don't agree that they're part of it. Although Scotland is counted in, Ireland is mostly independent, but they're indeed a part of Britain or the British Isles (geographically speaking.)
Canada & Australia also are affiliated with the UK and follow the Queen. |
