Ratings-wise, "Eastenders" on the BBC and "Coronation Street" on ITV have been the most watched shows on UK TV for many years, only occasionally beaten by major sporting events.
My favourite shows tend to be BBC2 and BBC3 comedy shows that nobody else watches. Though "Doctor Who" is brilliant. |

Top Gear currently tops the charts in the None soap opear television department. However its probably Coronation Street that currently tops the charts.
If your talking all time highest viewing then its Eastenders with the 'Den divorces Angie' episode toping 30 million viewers, at that time that was over half the population.
My current favorite has to be one i have already mentioned, Top Gear. Quality in every way and makes the licence fee worth paying. Thank you Aunty Beeb. |

A lot of people in the UK watch American shows such as Lost, Desperate Housewives etc, but if you mean British Television then soaps such as Eastenders and Coronation street have been popular for a ling time. People also tend to watch a lot of reality shows like Big Brother, The Apprentice, I'm A Celebrity etc. Personally, I prefer American shows such as those that I mentioned. |

I assume you mean British made programmes because quite a lot of American television is shown here.
I'd say the most popular are the two main soaps Eastenders and Coronation street.
Then reality TV - Big brother, I'm a celebrity, X factor, Britains got talent etc, also strictly come dancing is a huge hit
Then Doctor Who is pretty huge here which is a sci-fi series
Top Gear was mentioned a lot it is good, its a comedy programme about cars.
Then chats shows such as Jonathan ross, Graham Norton, Trisha (British version of Oprah) and various others.
Popular gameshows include Who wants to be a millionaire, weakest link and deal or no deal (the british versions)
Then there are alos lots of popular comedy quiz shows, Have I got news for you and never mind the buzzcocks are the most popular i think.
Hope this helps.
