Although the major metropolitan area of London is contained within the "county" of Greater London, there are actually 32 separate "boroughs" which actually perform the role of local administration, and the "Square Mile" of the City of London which has a separate administration and police force.
Strategic planning and development (for example the planning for the 2012 Olympic Games) are done at Greater London level through the Mayor's office in partnership with the boroughs.
The Greater London and Boroughs administration area also encompasses parts of Surrey, Hertfordshire, Kent, Essex and Middlesex, but jurisdiction for police, fire, council tax payment, eductaion etc. is assumed by the relevant London Borough. |

The City of London has no need to be in a county, it is the capital of Britain and is big enough in it's own right. |

Parts of it are covered by Middlesex County, but I don't know if that's the only one. |

This is one of those lovely questions and I hope someone can provide the answer. London City is only 1 square mile, the surroundings are made up of other cities. Yet we blindly go along calling it all London.
The river Thames runs along this bit =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The South East of England is on the other side of the Thames called Kent. |

People...listen up....London (or Greater London - ie. the 32 boroughs is a county in itself) - look it up. Middlesex doesn't exist anymore apart from as a postal address. Bit like Wessex and stuff - have you been reading too many Thomas Hardy novels or what??
Argument over. |
