You can be anyone you want to in London. I got stuck at Victoria station dressed as a girl as the victim of a joke. I ended up in a pub in Camden, drinking pints, dressed the same, joking about it with the barstaff without anyone batting an eyelid.

I'm wondering the same thing (i'm going in late June). So far, people have told me that muted colors work well (an English guy said Americans dress too "loud" - colors included), and that denim pants and white tennis shoes are "typically American" (I interpret that as stay away from that combo).
On my list of things to do is pick up a couple of UK magazines (like Vogue or Elle or something) - bookstores like Borders sell them.
